My dad was a fighter pilot in the 1950’s/60’s, he never went out without a necktie on. We have actual 8mm film of him capsizing a sailing dinghy in Cyprus whilst wearing a shirt and tie….when he resurfaced his wet cigarette was still in his mouth and aviators still in place. He was a cool old dude.

Just a little motivation from someone working too ATP. If you want to be a pilot, yes it's extremely expensive, and no you may not be able to be a military pilot, if you want it bad enough and you have what it takes inside yourself. You can ! Be a pilot. It's extremely difficult expensive and takes a lot of time, belive me if you want it you can find a way.

When you mention that the public tends to be enthralled by the "one-on-one" aspect of aerial dogfighting, as part of the romantic image surrounding pilots, it makes me think of another branch of warfare combat which had a lot of the same mystique: DUELLING. Maybe, just for fun, you should do a video on, "Why Are SWORDSMEN So Stylish?"
("Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya: you scuffed my loafers, prepare to die.")

I'm a navigation officer in the merchant navy, however before my study, next to my current career, I also liked to be a pilot. Our jobs look similar btw. An airplane is basically a flying ship. When I was in high school, I used to fly often in flight simulator of which I learned a lot about aviation and some navigation knowledge, which became for me later useful in the maritime world. I once also flew a real airplane (Robin DR400) and the instructor said I did a great job. As a kid I also liked to wear those cool pilot jackets. Really a style I liked to wear.
However at the end, I chose for the maritime world instead of the avation world. Because of the stupid education system in my country, low job opportunities as well as the high costs. Flight schools are expensive. And the last reason is that the maritime world is also more adventurous in my opinion. Sadly in most Dutch merchant navy companies we don't get those nice uniforms and just wear basic clothing. I guess I have to buy my own uniform.

1:43 Gustave Whitehead and some others are recorded to have flown before them- some say they were more “touch and go” than consistent “flight”.
