Crywolf - 12.25.16 [untitled christmas song] (acoustic version)

Am I the only one who secretly hates Christmas music? Itā€™s always felt like a bit of a spit in the face of the somber emotional palette this season has in my mind.

A while back a friend of mine heard me talking about it and they challenged me to write my own Christmas song. I gave it a shot and what came out was, in my opinion, one of the most straightforward and candid songs Iā€™ve ever written. It doesnā€™t involve complex themes or abstract lyricism. It is just an honest exploration of the gut-wrenching feeling you have when you realize you have lost the place that your soul felt at peace.

I recorded this new stripped down version of it with just me and a felt piano for you guys. If you are another person for whom the holiday season is one of reflection on loss, I hope it comforts you and shows you you are not alone šŸ¤

Lyrics:

Did it get colder this year?
Inside my room I see crystals of ice
Suspended pieces covered in glass
Snowbanks are falling on the sides of my bed
The sides of my bed

But it doesnā€™t snow here in Los Angeles
Abandoned roads, but theyā€™re warmā€¦ Iā€™m just losing it.
Everyoneā€™s gone back to sweet places they call their homes
But I wander aimlessly
Canā€™t shake this chill from my bones

Cause where could I go to feel home, when my home was you?
Surrounded, but always alone
In this snow I canā€™t move
I feel that yearning to leave and belong somewhere new
But where could I go? Darling, you took my whole world with you

JUSTIN THIS IS BEAUTIFUL It so well captures the beautiful, dulled palette of winter. Murky greys and whites, the deep purple-grey of cloudy winter skies, the rusty color of dying grass, and the deep blue of water before it begins freezingā€¦Iā€™ve always thought winter was so beautiful and unique. It feels heavy and dark, but in a way that is sacred and otherwordly, so it isnā€™t as simple as being ā€œsadā€ like a lot of people describe it. Itā€™s so much more than that. Iā€™ve always loved this song so, so much, because it captures that incredibly. Those handful of acoustic songs you have are every bit as stunning as your other works, and I adore them, and Iā€™m delighted to have this to enjoy now. Youā€™ve outdone yourself as always. I noticed it seems like youā€™ve been really enjoying yourself lately with music and trust me, it shows <3 Iā€™ve really enjoyed seeing you experiment with new styles and other artists. It really does feel like youā€™re having fun, but it never diminishes the depth or quality of your work, and thatā€™s something I really admire as an artist. You inspire me so much (I literally owe the novel Iā€™m planning to Exuvium, so thank you for that)! PSā€” Datura was my #1 listened to song this year >:] Keep it up dude!

That same feeling when you moved from a cold and gloomy place to a sunny and warm one, but the void inside of your soul didn't go away. Whatever, i would like to wish you (me either) to not surrender. You are not alone, you just not find yet a strong reason to keep exist

The description fits very well to what i feel about the christmas season. Never really experienced much of the happy stuff. Everyone around me, especially family, just pretended that everything is great and happy and shortly after it went back to the usual. Always felt so fake to me, thats why i still hate it and usually just sit by myself or with other similar people on discord.

December will always be a difficult month for me, not only because of the loss of someone but in addition to that, a sea of memories comes that hurts my heart, just yesterday I cried a little to remember all that and now listening to this song I felt comfort and also I wanted to cry again but I think it's part of healing. thank you for making such beautiful pieces <3

This is by far one of my favorite songs youve ever made, ive been listening to it for years, everything you make is so raw and emotional and is just amazing to listen too. It makes my night drives home more enjoyable. There was a time not long ago where i was in a dark place, driving home one night i had some really bad thoughts about driving just slightly left off a road and seeing what would happen to me. In my random mix your song "your joy is your sorrow unmasked" played when i saw the bright, brilliant moon that night, all those thoughts melted away, and i made it home. I listened to your songs everyday since that night. Hopefully one day i can see you preform live if thats an option.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us. For someone with no family, this time of the year is the hardest. It leaves me feeling like I'm missing something that I've lost.

I really can't describe what your music does to me. This isn't the typical genre I listen to. I usually tend to listen to House music or Synthwave. But yet I enjoy a lot of the songs you release. It started back then when I first heard songs like "Anachronism" or "Neverland" and stretches till today. And others are just as confused about it since they know what I usually listen to. I just thought maybe these words might mean something to you.

God this year has been hard. Who knew thanksgiving would spiral me. Thank you for this. I hate that we are all hurting.. this lone feeling doesnā€™t feel so lonely anymore. Though the people I know think Iā€™m so happy. Iā€™m hurting and this song expresses it so well šŸ„€ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ I love you. And thank you. I needed this today.
