bfan.link/tell-me-i-m-your-girl Tell Me I’m Your Girl’ is a sarcastic love song about all the tacky things we want when falling in love, as GIMMY (aka Gemma Owens) explains; “I love romance, all the chaos and honesty of it, not just the shining stuff but all the grit as well. This song is a tacky picture of what I think a lot of people desire — to be treated like royalty and be paid for — but when you’re young, you can only really afford cheap cheese and wine from Woolworths haha”. The song is also about challenging gender roles in relationships as GIMMY explains; “Being queer, it feels important to me to reinvent and challenge gender roles.”
The energetic and fiery ‘Tell Me I’m Your Girl’ music video is the perfect visualisation of GIMMY’s idea of challenging gender roles and wanting all the tacky things in the dating world. Directed and written by GIMMY and shot by Dom Sullivan, the video was shot around around Mullumbimby and Murwillumbah (Northern NSW) and sees GIMMY and Samson (guitarist) switching their stereotypical roles as they ride motorbikes, fly rockets, have picnics and frolic on horseback together. GIMMY explains; “I came up with the story line and concept of challenging gender roles with Samson dressed as a woman, myself dressed as a man and Kyle (Bass) & Barclay (Drums) dressed as neutral furniture like objects to represent gender neutrality, in respect that women can also portray a masculine quality of being chivalrous as well as men.”
