Jeremy Strong became a household name after his gripping portrayal of Kendall Roy in Succession - and has gone on to star in the Broadway play An Enemy of the People.

Success brought huge scrutiny after a 2021 New Yorker profile, which documented his so-called ā€˜method actingā€™, went viral.

Strongā€™s acting style divided opinion not only online but also among his Succession cast-mates Brian Cox (ā€˜Logan Royā€™) and Kieran Culkin (ā€˜Roman Royā€™) who suggested he goes too far - while former colleagues Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway and Aaron Sorkin came to his defence.

How Strong approaches his craft combined with the use of words like ā€œdramaturgicallyā€ in interviews has led to many labelling him as ā€œa pretentious method actorā€ - but this characterisation misunderstands his craft.

This is the story of how Jeremy Strong went from a working class outsider to Emmy award winner. And on his journey to the top, his unwavering commitment has revealed genius qualities to his acting.

I felt so bad when people were clowning him. He's not pretentious, he's not asshole or sexual harasser, he's just passionate about acting without any nepo connections who achieved his dreams at the age of 40.

common critiques of jeremy often boil down to blatant anti-intellectualism. we're so used to being fed upbeat, scripted celebrity interviews that when an actor is actually invested in his craft, is honest about his method, and speaks with eloquence and passion, people interpret it as being overly self-involved and pretentious.

Calling Jeremy pretentious is so weird in all his interviews he seems extremely humble and pleasant

Sincerity is seen as performative to people who are too nihilistic to feel anything besides apathy and irony. Itā€™s literally his job to feel things as genuinely as possible so as to portray his characterā€™s emotions with humanity and realism.

His performance in Succession was phenomenal. Heā€™s great at what he does and he respects his craft. I think those calling him pretentious just want to bring him down to their level. Great analysis!

Imagine being so passionate and skilled and people with a fraction of the talent mock you. He's a great actor!

I think thereā€™s a genuine annoyance when hard workers work hard, and then do well. That yes, he was blessed to know his passion early, but it was through his sheer will and EFFORT to lead in a series that will be beloved for decades. His admittance to being uncomfortable when interviewed and unprepared is sympathetic enough, let alone knowing his background as a constant outsider. Appreciate you making this video!

What have we come to that when you are actually serious and motivated people label it as pompous? I admire him. He made the entire show richer and more impactful.

He reminds me of Adam Driver, with the attention to their craft, the all-in dynamic, the devotion to, and respect for, the work, craft and characters. Both not coming from Hollywood, both being considered oddities. Both being very thoughtful and eloquent.

Amazing video! Iā€™ve watched so many of his interviews and tried to put my finger on why people think heā€™s pretentious when all I can see is exactly what you said. A misunderstood genius in a world where people donā€™t see acting as an art form anymore. So happy Jeremy is making me love tv shows as an art again! Thank you!

He help make succession. So many amazing scenes and months are bc he was so in tune with his character. We wouldnā€™t have had Jess without him!!! He convinced the writers she was pivotal for his character so she stayed. Iā€™ve listened and read so many of interviews and I could hear him talk about his craft for hours

With some time from succession now, when I think of the show, I think of Strong and Kendall first. Succession goes from a great show to an iconic one because of him.

Really solid video. I really think that he's a true artist, and people are so not used to seeing one. He's not a bit pretentious, he's just a real artist who's passionate about his craft.

Heis a sef- made, brilliant, intense, perfectionist monster of an actor. He has culture and inteligence and sensitivity. In our mediocre times, these qualities rub people the wrong way. Congrats on this analisys!

Iā€™ve learned to always become interested and intrigued by any artist thatā€™s accused of pretentiousness. Mediocre artists never get called that.
