Civil war is increasingly becoming an escalation pathway toward disaster for the U.S. and countries around the world. On the flip side, learning how to avoid civil conflict — and more ambitiously, repair our civic fabric — might have the greatest leverage for addressing the challenges we face.

Join Tristan Harris and Barbara F. Walter, one of the world’s leading experts on civil wars, as they discuss the drivers of civil war, how social media fuels conflict, and how we might repair our fractured democracies.

Nations which were once hailed as "democracies" are becoming increasingly authoritarian, and individuals from all sides of the political spectrum are dissatisfied with what they are seeing (unless they benefit from a certain brand of authoritarianism). There is a difference between a nation actually being democratic, being perceived as being democratic, and having a functional government; the USA is obviously struggling with this, but they glossed over Canada, UK, and Sweden becoming increasingly draconian and authoritarian.

I would honesty like to know what percentage of the 330,000,000 of us, are intently advocating for civil war. Barbara didn’t say here and it’s an important point.

You guys really need to just look at history. Civil war US over an election. The Yugoslavia Civil war of Bosnia over an election.

Thank you ! Another important tile to the mosaic. It is amazing how precious Frances Haugen work (and risks taken) are fundamental to overcome the handicap of not accessing Facebook/Meta analysis and provides strong evidence of the links and the power of destruction of a greedy scrupleless market-led internet/social media.

It's interesting that this author neglected to mention that BIPOC voters shifted significantly toward the GOP.

When exactly did Russia say they were going to take control of the whole country (Ukraine)? What's the source for that statement? - comment was made at 13:20. Thanks.

at 35:08 > i have one explanation for this; it is beacause soc media spreads the ideals and values of globalization, which is a pretty brutal, antihumanitatian way of life. competition not local communties

You never mentioned the Christian nationalist court taking away women's rights and medical privacy. The extremists are also in our court, government, military and police and then congress votes against investigating these extremists, citizens are in fact being targeted by their own government.

Common man. That Midan 2004 peoples revolution fairytale is a bit more complicated than this naive interpretation. Invalidates the entire propaganda attempt. Expected something more sophisticated from this episode. No insight. Does not address complexity. Old school.
