Arms swinging, breathing heavy, darkness all around me. My enemies fall beneath my broken sword and splintered shield. Soon I am the only one left. I feel no closer to death than a dead man. Flying beasts of shadows and cursed souls whirl around me, snapping at me with their blood stained, crooked teeth.
Yet I carry on.
Deep gashes on my body, each second feels like a minute, each minute an hour, each hour an eternity. My enemies fall only with blows to the head to stop their vicious, malign laughter. One of my eyes is scarred and blind. Blood pouring out my nose and mouth and ears no different than a waterfall or river.
And yet I carry on.
I long to close my eyes and accept my fate. But I remember them. My friends, alive and dead. My family, deceased and living. My wife and unborn child. I remember, and fight for them. With them. All of them. I will rid the earth of this wretched disease, no matter the cost.
And so I carry on.
