Strombo's Lit with Naomi Klein, Author of 'Doppelganger: A Trip Into the Mirror World'

Let’s get into it!!!!

Digital shadows, conspiracy influencers, vaccines, apartheid, the Holocaust, the term self-hating Jew, Palestine, calling yourself out, having skin in the game, and what the left got wrong (and the liberals who think they are left). Watch this — you might agree and disagree with some of this, but you will be engaged.

I think it’s important to have conversations like this — that puts us in spaces where we can listen to other points of view and actually hear them. Naomi Klein has been supporting and challenging people from day one. She is many things, including an author and activist. Her ninth book is another bestseller. It’s called ‘Doppelganger: A Trip Into the Mirror World’.

Through the lens of the idea of a doppelganger and an online self (which you might have too), she explores the Mirror World—"our destabilized present rife with doubles and confusion, where far-right movements playact solidarity with the working class, AI-generated content blurs the line between genuine and spurious, New Age wellness entrepreneurs turned anti-vaxxers further scramble our familiar political allegiances, and so many of us project our own carefully curated digital doubles out into the social media sphere."

So it will get spicy, and maybe we can change. But Naomi reminds us — it’s not about changing “one uncle at a time."

I have the same issue with my attention span. I stopped being able to make it through a book when I used to have 3 books on the go at once. I love these discussions and look forward to getting my focus back with this book.

I loved this, I haven't read the book yet. Its on my shelf to read after my obligation reading for work. Thanks for having her on the Strombo show. I agree, Gen X, my generation - the last generation to exist without constant surveillance. I remember traveling after university, thinking I could just disappear and only my Mom would really care, lol.

Naomi is as good as it gets. She will be up there with Noam Chomsky in the history books. Such a necessary force in this world!

You nailed it 22:23: everyone acted with certainty (during the pandemic), and no-one had the right to be certain. So great to hear both of your brilliance here on some big questions, and what I believe is the mess media can create on many levels.

I've just discovered Naomi Klein, and I'm looking forward to reading her book. This interview convinced me that it will be well worth my time to take a deeper dive into the ideas discussed in this video.

Congratulations on an excellent interview. It’s the best discussion and analysis that I’ve read/heard of what happened during 2020 and 2021, with science disinformation and influencers creating distrust due to an overall lack of understanding of the scientific process and its foibles — it’s an imperfect process because scientists are people with flaws (and most MDs aren’t trained as researchers). You’re quite right about sooo many people, including health professionals, checking their critical thinking skills at the door. OK, so I’m listing this interview as an option in the assignment where students watch an external, course relevant talk and make a 1-2 minute TikTok style video describing what they learned. Your discussion is directly relevant to the media literacy and digital literacy themes AND the climate change and invasive species topics of my Applied Ecology biology course which looks at the science-policy-politics spectrum. ps I have ALWAYS known the difference between Naomi Klein and Naomi Wolf 😊 pps I was shocked at the turn Naomi Wolf has taken since she wrote the beauty myth 😮 ppps you nailed Steve Bannon’s motives

Loved the conversation, thanks for sharing it with us , I got “Shock Doctrine” in a garage 😊sale in Etobicoke , Ontario many years ago for 50C ! Just few weeks after my arrival to Canada as an Immigrant from Iran . Had troubles with words and my english but went through dictionary millions of times! But it was so eye opening, read it multiple times and wondered why we hadn’t have access to info like this back home so many years, later I listened to a radio program about Naomi’s parents, sharing your video today I wrote to a friend from my heart, that parents with that level knowledge and compassion for humanity couldn’t have raised any better writer than Naomi , my deepest respect , didn’t know she has poetry too ! Please let me know where to find them . By the way that book was stolen along with my suitcase on a trip south !😅😅 I hope that thieve/s read it too

A lot to unpack the political "doppelganger" ..I agree this is collective work, the tipping point of the message is that necessary internal and generational shifts are so split. I love the way you framed having conversations we can be present with and learn from, without the accepted hatred...and constant streaming live trauma isn't helping our psyches unfold. Edit:: I am wondering the political appeal of "save the children" will have on future human and child trafficking. I think we haven't seen past the frame yet.
