A James Tullos video and a Krimson Rogue video in the same day. Surely a sign for better times to come.

Make skylings have literal wings that their curse withers and deforms. They live in constant pain and body dismorphia under the curse, and want the relief of a decade of functioning wings.

Most confusing to me was how Isla did actually have powers the whole time, but didn't know because they just... told her she didn't. But like... why didn't she still do involuntary things like bleed petals? Isla makes no sense what so ever.

Hereā€™s a way the whole ā€œhuman heartsā€ thing could work: - Wildlings curses cause a deep, insatiable hunger for blood. They are a mostly carnivorous people who feed on animals. This can be fodder for classism when Isla gets together with the other royals, if they stereotype her as a savage. - AND I know Crow Caller mentioned a lot of descriptions comparing things to food, itā€™d be an interesting character trait of that was done on purpose. Like Islaā€™s only accustomed to eating fresh prey but she falls in love with other cuisines when sheā€™s able to travel, but maybe other food makes her sick. She loves it, but it makes her sick, and other Wildlings think sheā€™s weird for indulging anyway. - Possible folklore to do with this concept: there was an infamous Wildling in the past who waged war against the other lands and demanded sacrifices of human hearts. Folklore says that every heart she consumed allowed her to gain more powerful magic, but she became more beast-like with every sacrifice, until she was finally killed. The legend is used as a cautionary tale in Wildling culture. - Hell, maybe that could be an interesting reason why Isla shouldnā€™t have powers, if the only way Wildlings can gain magic is by consuming others. If eating other people is a big no-no (which OF COURSE it would be!) then yeah, itā€™d be more worrying if she did have powers. - Heck, this could even set up a plot twist where itā€™s found out that the Wildling fable was just propaganda used to keep the Wildlings ā€œin their place,ā€ and the whole ā€œeating heartsā€ thing was a lie from the start. Wildlings do have some sort of capacity for magic thatā€™s completely unrelated to cannibalism, but a rival kingdom has cut them off from it in retribution for whatever the legendary Wildling ruler did. Maybe the king of Lightlark himself is the one responsible for creating and perpetuating the anti-Wildling propaganda and cutting off their magic. Then part of the story could be Isla figuring out the truth behind her culture and fighting to liberate their magic. ā€¦Iā€™m going to save this plot bunny as idea fuel for my own fantasy writing.

I was listening to Krimson Rogue's 7hr review of this book. I ended up daydreaming a version where the Wildlings had only a single curse, that they would feel a drive to seduce someone, fall in love, then eat their heart. Once per lifetime. This would be pretty devasating for all involved and the Wildings could literally be called Heartbreakers.

I know at the start you said 'get rid of the heart-eating thing' but i still cant get over how 2 hearts per month would add up a lot of deaths really fast to the point its more people than exist on earth. did no one do any math when coming up with this

The royal families would probably have to breed some side lines to have enough expendable members to send to the tournaments. And then train them for these tournaments as good as they can. Maybe they would breed quite a lot of those expendable family members in order to have enough choice to get somebody who will be really good at whatever the tournament requires. We might see all the 3rd and 4th born princes and princesses having to become breeding stock for the tournament participants and also might see some eugenics going on to foster particular qualities in those people.

Honestly, if an editor or two just talked to Aster and helped her get the story just a little tighter and thought out, I think people would like Lightlark a lot. I like it, but thatā€™s because my taste is refined and curated for stuff exactly like Lightlark

The wildest thing about this book (when it comes to world building) is probably Isla's last name. And not because it's stupid but because it shows Alex Aster's world building skills. I was thinking about why Isla's last name is in english even tho everyone else has names in very basic spanish and then I realised! I'm learning spanish and then I checked if the name for crown is the same as in my language and it IS. Look it up. Look up the word crown in spanish. Alright. Alex talked how she wanted to publish the book years ago. That means, that for all those years she thought that giving a princess last name that literally translates to crown is such a good idea she wasn't willing to let it go, even after you know what happened. Instead she just translated it to english even tho it doesn't match naming conventions that she has set up HERSELF. There are so many words in spanish that she could use but she choose not to. My conclusion is that she doesn't care about what the world or its rules are if she want's something for aestethic or just because she likes it. Like chocolate or weird shein-esque dresses or stores that look like tree ornaments in world wihout christmas. This whole world is just build on the "rule of cool" and Aster doesn't even care. No matter what you did its still better that original because you thought about for more that a second. I'm sorry if my rumblings are not making sense, english is not my first language. Loved the video!

One way to fix the wildling curse is to make it slightly diffrent; If you fall in love, you feel a deep compulsion to eat THEIR heart. Why? Because wildlings are all about love and free love and being true to your body and how it is. The curse strips away their "free love" vibes. This would make so much more sense! Having the first fact; wildlings are all about free love and expression, then the curse is specifically to fuck with the wildling culture. Then adding the second fact; they eat the heart of their loved one and its a deep compulsion, which means that wildlings cannot love, only lust, if there are feelings that saints universal or platonic, you have to eat their heart Now, for how it'd work with Isla: Isla is convinced that she has the curse, but not the powers. This makes her sad. OR Isla is convinced she doesn't have the curse because she doesn't have the powers. This makes her feel hopeful. And, just to add to the spice; Grim took her memories away because she confessed to him and then freaked out, thinking his heart was going to get eaten. That's how I would change it and how I would try to make it work within the world

The wildlings have two curses because they already genocided another group and gained their curse.

A pretty easy way to solve the hearth eating problem is to make wildling way smaller than other realms. Like, all the other are regular countries with couple hundred of thousands of people, but entire wildling population is few hundred at most. They obviously would not have any land for their own, and would be nomadic. Serving as elite mercenary groups for example? Raiders who everyone hates, but cant really do anything about because they need them alive for the tournament?

Alt take: The history start with the kingdoms are at each others throats, basically endless wars and atrocities. Aurora finds the McGuffin that gives her unlimited power, so she curses the people so that they can't live without the others. Thus forcing the kingdoms to unite or die. But all of the nations are proud and would never accept being ruled by the others so the ruling families duke it out in the tournament to see who gets to rule for the next period. Make it so that with mixed decent weakens their powers and curses both. The curses will end once a child of all the families sits on the throne. They would have to have to use their wits and wiles to win with the weakest, but most diverse powers. Give the Princess secretly the blood of four families add some conflict with her family insisting on which Prince to court.
