MYTH: Yuan Shao was arrogant and did not enjoy those who were not from aristocratic background like himself. TRUTH: Yuan Shao was handsome and respectable to everyone regardless of their background. Yuan Shao was very popular(he didnt become coalition leader by talking down to everyone) and was just as capable of recruiting capable people as Cao Cao, I would dare to say that Cao Cao probably learned this trait from Yuan Shao as a teenager. The arrogant aristocrat who felt like he deserve to rule due to his background better describes his half-brother/cousin Yuan Shu. Yuan Shao's biggest weakness was rather indecisiveness and lack of initiative.

After crashing Yuan Shao, Cao Cao found many letters sent to Yuan Shao by many of his subordinates, trying to surrender. Then Cao Cao burned all letters and said: "even I believed I would lose in the difficult times."

That's a nice pile of food. Would be a shame if it caught fire.

"Yuan Shao may be strong, but he is not to be feared. He is too undeciding to act." Cao Cao, Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

According to the Romance chapter and opera "Riding alone for thousands of miles," Guan Yu served Cao Cao during the Battle of Guandu and was an integral part of his victory. After Liu Bei's defeat, Guan Yu was separated from his lord and no news came of whether or not Liu had survived. Guan then offered his service to Cao on the condition that if and when Liu ever appeared he would have to leave Cao to return to his sworn brother. Liu Bei did re-emerge after the Guandu and Guan thus took his leave from Cao Cao's forces. Along the way back, many of Cao's officers tried to stop Guan Yu, fearing his prowess in the inevitable battles he would fight against them, but none were successful. Cao Cao himself scolded them for trying to stop Guan, saying that they could all learn a lesson from his loyalty and virtue.

The thing is Cao Cao had all the talented advisors standing beside him such as Guo Jia, Xun Yu, Xun You, Cheng Yu and Liu Ye and he constantly consulted for their opinions, Yuan Shao had bunch of advisors who were just as equally talented as Cao Cao's side such as Tian Feng, Guo Tu, Xu You, but he always failed to listen to their advices.

"Domains under heaven, after a long period of division, tends to unite; after a long period of union, tends to divide. This has been so since antiquity." Those are first words of the great Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I think they describe that era very well.

NOW THIS, THIS IS LOVE. I basically grew up with the Three Kingdoms and Chinese History and seeing that you're covering one of the most important battles in Cao Cao's rise to power is amazing! Keep it up!

The early careers of Cao Cao's was perhaps one of the most interesting profiles to study. Having started out as merely one of the many bit player warlords, he was able to repeatedly get an advantage on much bigger, tougher foes by fully utilizing talented individuals and having high initiative to balance the odds. \(இдஇ )/ His dynamism and cunning makes him a very interesting figure to read, combining elements of a ruthless CEO and a battle hungry general. But best of all? His ultimate goal is not that bad either, to unite the land under one banner again and this time under able leadership. This is why he is always portrayed either as a dangerous (but interesting) villain who can always exploit the situation and challenge the protagonists, or a great gray anti-hero, a Byronic rebel reformer ready to to the utmost to accomplish his goals while ruthlessly burning the rotten elements down. He would have been the undisputed master of the post Han world if not for a realm of worthy heroes who opposed him.

For those who confuse about the story, especially if you watch Three Kingdom TV Series .. Here's the summary, Record of the Three Kingdom = made by Chen Shou (233-297), An official historian from Jin dynasty (found by Sima Yan, he's Sima Yi decedent). Consider historical version of Han - Three Kingdom Era. Romance of the Three kingdom = Romantic-novel version from Three Kingdom era, heavily influenced by Chen Shou work. RTK was made by Luo Guanzhong (1330-1400), a writer from Ming Dynasty. He's Chinese Version of Shakespeare.

You didn't mention that when Cao Cao was leading the raid on Yuan Shao's food depot in Wuchao, he had his men disguised as Yuan's soldiers. The Yuan defenders did not detect the treachery and allowed them passage into the depot. They were surprised when they were suddenly attacked.

This was a very effective sponsored video. I hadn't considered getting Total War Three Kingdoms, but this historical context presentation really put me in the mood and is causing me to seriously look into getting this game.
