Merlin Sheldrake presents an IMAX movie called Fungi: Web of Life.

The film is about the ways that fungi have shaped life on Earth for over a billion years, and how we might partner with them to adapt to the radical change of our times.

It's narrated by Björk, who speaks the story with inimitable magic and sensitivity.

It features astonishing fungal time lapse photography from some of the best fungal photographers working today, including Steve Axford (@planet_fungi), Patrick Hickey, and Wim van Egmond. Much of this footage depicts aspects of fungal life that have never been captured in such high spatial and temporal resolution before.

The film will be trickling into IMAX cinemas across Europe and North America over the latter part of 2023 and into 2024, and may already be playing at a theatre near you. Please make enquiries with your nearest IMAX cinemas if you're keen to see it.

I'm a fan of the Sheldrakes, original thinkers that enrich the pallet of wisdom and knowledge. And this story is more important for our future than most realise.

Like an unexplored continent (nay, unexplored world) for most viewers all of this is a vast blank space. Using the immersive power of sound and image, this movies offers viewers a larger than life visit to a foreign world that we inhabit and that inhabits our interiors and exteriors.

Wonderful! I can't wait. I'm writing a solarpunk novel, and I have a big focus on mycelia. I believe we need to see the fungal kingdom as sacred and great teachers of how we need to learn to live.

so often the smallest things in life are the most important...and humans not only overlook them, but actively work to eliminate them.

I love me a good fungi documentary. I hope the foley effects are toned down a bit in the final mix though. I found them very distractingly loud and know it would drive me nuts during a long show. Other than that, I'm excited for it. Please make sure the voice overs aren't hindered by overdone background music and sounds.

that flute music ensemble towards the end reminds me of a piece that Don Hertzfeldt used in one of the world of tomorrow cartoons

that's good news! this could also be really interesting for our Montreal Planetarium. But as with IMAX, it'll have to be in French as well. ;-)
