11:38 "The Kroot are not a particulary scientifically advanced species, but somehow they managed to hammer together some spaceships"
Seems legit.

Oooooh boy arch, let me get in on that:
Biologicaly speaking we eat DNA daily, EVERYTHING has DNA, it's proteins that get broken down, absorbed and recycled into base proteins we use to synthesize our own DNA for new cells. Now imagine a species that instead of breaking down eaten DNA, instead absorbs it whole. Then this DNA is distributed to cells where a form of cellular reproduction will comence which integrates parts of this newly absorbed genome into the original host genome genome of the kroot. From this point forward, these new cells with the modified genome will enter a rapid proliferation phase while the old cells with the old genome are ordered to die, thus in a quick window of time the new genome becomes majoritary for this specimen.
Arch, this is not as impossible as it sounds. All it demands is a special adaptation of the digestive and cellular reproduction systems.

An idea that I've heard for the Kroot having space travel is that Orks crashed on Pech and the Kroot ate them, so they have the ability to innately understand technology to a very limited degree. It might help explain why the Kroot are also one of the only other races to have an underbite (an otherwise rather Orky trait).

Bit of fluff you missed from White Dwarf back when they were fist introduced, the Shapers won't let them eat Tyranids.... It never said why it was just a story in which the Shaper suddenly came over with an inexplicable feeling of dread as his pack (or whatever they're called) was about to tuck into some gaunts & hoping he could stop them.

The Norsemen never shunned luxuries. Why do you think that they were so happy to raid monetarists? They were unguarded and filled to the brim with shiny shit. They raided to gain wealth in the forms of land, slaves, gold/silver, and similar things. Like the sacramental wine that the monks would make. Even more, the vikings were not just the raiders. They were traders of all types, they were settlers going to set up a farm in another land, they were warriors going out to conquer rival kingdoms. The viking was literally EVERY Scandinavian that left Scandinavia at the time. Hell, the word's actual meaning is closer to 'adventurer' than anything else.

Technically Arch, every species has a different definition of luxury. I could see and understand the Kroot not wanting things like soft comfy chairs, seeing them as a waste of resources and culturally as something that makes you weak, in the same manner orks see the Tau as weak, for shunning close quarters combat. When you have limited resources and your culture tells you,. you don't need to use them to make comfy chairs, you won't really see yourself as missing out, until such time when you sit in a comfy chair and decide you enjoy it. Your analogy with Sparta is a bit flawed as well, in order for that to work, there would have to be a tribe of Kroot, who love luxuries. Any contact with Tau luxuries for example, would be seen as basically "those baffling, weird alien things". Also are Kroot really mercs for cash, or is a chance for new DNA, their ulterior motive, with cash being seen as that weird thing Tau and others insist on giving them?

>Shaper walks up to his kin "Alright guys, I've traded a bunch of shiny rocks to the rogue traders in exchange for this pile of eldar corpses from some nearby battle. If we eat 2 pounds of Eldar for every 8 pounds of ork, we should be able to absorb some extra muscle mass without turning into imbeciles. But don't eat too much eldar or we'll become sex-crazed mutant monsters."
