Although they're job appears to be only ceremonial it is not. They are soldiers. They're horses are soldiers as well. Be a good tourist and always treat them with respect.

I love how the tourists, when they've taken their photo, thank the guards! Priceless! AND they don't cause anxiety for the horse!
