There are three operations of speaking in " tongues" in scripture: 1) The first evidence that a believer has recieved the Holy Spirit and the Spirit filled believers private prayer language for self edification, " He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifys himself ( 1Cor.14:4). According to the biblical Law of Repetition the Word will repeat something three times to point our attention to an important spiritual truth. Three times in the book of Acts it is written to where believers recieved the Holy Spirit and what happened immediately upon them recieving, Acts ch.2,10, and ch.19. In each instance the first thing that happened was that they spoke in tongues. 2) The gift of speaking in tongues. This gift not all believers have because the Word says that, " The manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal( everyone)". This gift works together with a believer with the gift of interpretation of tongues so that all in a church gathering may be edified. 3) A sign to unbelievers. In this operation speaking in tongues is overheard by a nonbelievers in their native language as evidence to them that what is transpiring is of God. This operation as well as operation #1 is what occured in Acts ch.2. Lastly, in the original Greek that the N.T. was written in our English word " tongues" is singular not plural and means one spiritual language.

In all do respect, you're either ignorant to some parts of scripture or you're cherry picking scripture to fit you're narrative. On point two, read 1 Corinthians 14. I will supply some verses below. It is not talking about other "known" languages. Read Acts 19:1-6. They said they only know of John's baptism. That would be water baptism. That is what John did. Then, it says Paul laid hands on them, and as evidence they began speaking in tongues and prophesying. 1 Corinthians 14:2 "For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit." I mean this is as clear cut and dry as it gets that it's not a human language since human language wouldn't be speaking to God, but to man. Therefore, men would understand it. When it says, "no one" understands him, I take God at His word. No one means no one. Last, it says utters mysteries in the Spirit. That would mean it is something that the person praying doesn't even know. It is a mystery on the Spirit can decipher. 1 Corinthians 14:14 "For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful." Mind isn't unfruitful when speaking in a common language. Everytime you speak in English for example, your brain must supply you with the words to say that gives the language structure and meaning. Mark 16:17 "And these signs will accompany those who believe. in my name they will cast out demons, they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover." 2 Timothy 1:5-6 "I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure dwells in you as well. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you THROUGH THE LAYING ON OF MY HANDS..." Notice, it didn't say he received this gift by salvation or baptism, but laying on of hands. I have grown up Baptist my entire life, but I broke down the traditions and started reading God's word without any traditions and allowing the Holy Spirit to teach me. I have no ill will towards Baptist either as Baptists have great doctrine, but I would find it a real far reach to suggest that speaking in tongues was just speaking in another language considering the Word would appear to say the opposite. Speaking in tongues is for the edification and building up of the person speaking as said in 1 Corinthians 14. Paul also mentions in the same chapter he does it more than anyone and wishes everyone would do it, but there is a time and place for it. You think Paul would say He speaks in tongues more than anyone if it was just another language? You ever just start going around and speaking in French all the time and by doing so it builds you up in God? Of course not. We need to get real with God's word. Break down all traditions.

Some lump initial evidence of receiving the Holy Ghost in with the gift of tongues. Several times in the New Testament new believers are baptized and receive the Holy Ghost evidenced by speaking in tongues. There seems to be no reason for a foreign language in these cases. I believe what I read in those places. What is confusing is that in practice the tongues are apparently unknown tongues. Also in Acts 2 the people thought the apostles were drunk. In another place someone wanted to buy the power to do what the apostles did when the Holy Ghost was given. So this seems to be more than speaking a foreign language. I can't make heads or tails out of it all. But to me the tongues at baptism seem to be different than the gift of tongues.

Today there are many churches, trying to follow Christ in his word,by faith ,seek speeking in tongues,in faith,go to heaven,in faith, but Jesus said you must be born again in spirit, and the holy ghost will come in you as proof! And will be in you! This is what's important, and gives us power to bind and loose in spirit, thru Christ Jesus name amen! KJV

It seems to me 1 Corinthians 14 might be teaching that there are a second kind of speaking in tongues, reminiscent of what some charismatics are teaching/believing. What would be your take on this chapter?

Interesting and some points are valid and true, but when i started speaking in tongues. It was taught a way of spiritual warfare. Speaking directly to God without the intellect getting in the way. Which made me feel strongly spiritual, which provided some spiritual discernment and gifts of rebuking evil spirits.

Very good teaching. I fully agree with you. Though i have never been to a Pentecostal Charismatic services have observed them and found they are lacking in the fruits of the Spirit. God knew how Satan is going to Counterfeit it and stopped the gifts with the Apostles. The Apostolic fathers and early Church fathers wrote to this effect in the first 5 centuries. Agnes Ozman and team who were Bible students of Charles Fox Parham who first pushed this idea of Speaking in tongues as a sign of Baptism of the HS had no idea about I Corinthians 12 and 14. Agnes Ozman sat with her head backwards and started speaking in Chinese continuously. Very much like a demonic posession. What was the purpose ? There was no Chinese there. It only helped to impress her fellow students and inspire them to follow her. The entire Pentecostal Charismatic movement or renewal is for Ecumenism and One World Religion of Antichrist. It is uniting all Protestant /Evangelical churches with the Catholic church. Mystery Babylon!! Iam not forgetting that the are many Pentecostals who study the Word and teach unlike many of the other denominations . May Yahweh bless your Ministry and use you more and more for His Kingdom.

Speaking in tongues is not gibberish! According to scripture it is an actual language. An unknown refers to a language not known to the individual. Speaking in a tongue of Angels refers to the way an Angel speaks with Divine elegance. When Angels spoke to people throughout the Bible, they spoke in a language that was understood by the person to whom they were speaking to. So many have done a disservice to the Body because they put themselves, beliefs and their own interpretation(eisegesis and narcigesis)when it comes to scripture. Another way to know that gibberish is not real is by seeing the so called "Christians" teaching other people to do it. Their are actual classes that people charge to learn this nonsense. Man does not have the ability or authority to give spiritual gifts. And there is never an interpreter when the gibberish flows out of their mouths. Hope this helps someone.

The first church was,a mess too ,back then ,they were learning how to follow Christ,to ,today the church, looks back at them as being more holy than today, but God is no respect of person ,he gave the spirit to them, and he gives us the same spirit, today, the same way,Jesus said you must be born again,in spirit and Christ, thru the holy ghost will come ,and be in you,and teach you,the truth with his word KJV,then and now,the same way ,to people that were just like us now, nothing's changed,!!!except the thing's that the church teaches now ,like ,believe and be saved, when Christ, himself, said we must be born again in spirit,it's Christ, that gave his life for our sins,to be forgiven ,we only need to follow him ,for in him alone is our salvation, complete, God bless,!!!

You gloss over the fact that on the day of Pentecost many thought the people speaking in tongues were drunk because they couldn’t understand them. When Peter preached to the Gentiles and they spoke in tongues there was no one there to hear languages .Yet they say were speaking in tongues .There was no one there to hear their “native language “ When the Samaritans spoke in tongues in Acts 19 there were no foreigners there to hear other languages .It’s clear they spoke in tongues . You cherry picked parts of verses to prove your point .One other point .When Paul preached to the Samaritan’s it’s clear they were believers in Jesus and were baptized under john .Paul then re-baptized them in Jesus name and then laid hands on them so they could receive the Holy Ghost and they spoke in tongues .How do you explain that ?
