Dozens of passengers were injured on a flight from Sydney to New Zealand when a Boeing 787 Dreamliner suddenly dropped. Chile-based Latam said the plane suffered a “technical event during the flight which caused strong movement.”

That is why you always remain buckled-up unless going for a toilet visit.

If you are not attached to the seat, you will be attached to the roof of the plane.

Not even the pilot knew what happened & that's scary.

And that's why they recommend you keep your seat belt fastened during flight.

I am always blown away when i hear the seatbelt light go out and hear everyone unbuckle their belt.

The lesson here is keep your seat belt on at all time.

A pilot would not casually make such a statement to a passenger

This sort of thing does happen sometimes. It's killed people before (broken neck from hitting the ceiling). That's why they're so adamant that you should wear your seatbelt all the time.

John Oliver's new episode on Boeing shows an undercover guy ask six 787 Dreamliner factory workers if they'd fly on one. 5 said "no", and 1 said "yes, but I kind of have a death wish." xD

Technical event? A thrust reverser deployed? Spoiler pop open? Time warp? No atmospheric contribution? Wear your seatbelt always.

A 787 does not just “ stop flying “
Physics 101 the aircraft was going 600 mph . This is consistent with an event that has led to the same injuries when a plane suddenly drops altitude due to CAT Clear Air Turbulence.

This happened to me once when I was very young and it was just like the witness in this video described. It happened out of nowhere, and we didnt just drop, it was like we were pulled down. A flight attendant was walking by and she shot straight up to the ceiling, stuck there like a cartoon character with her arms and legs splayed out, and came crashing down HARD. People tried to catch her but it was impossible to completely break her fall. Her face hit an armrest and no doubt she broke something. She swelled up instantaneously. It was horrifying and I was only ten years old, flying all alone without any family.

This is why I loosen my seat belt just a little, but never take it off unless I'm getting up to go to the restroom.

If there was a momentary total loss of power to the cockpit instruments, that would probably disengage the autopilot.
If the trim was set slightly nose down at that moment, then it could well produce negative G until the pilots could react.
Very strange that that would happen because the left and right instruments are usually on separate supplies.

If you use Kayak to book flights, they have a menu where you can exclude specific models of airliners from your search.

Two possible solutions or a combination of both:
1. CAT: which was so heavy that even the electrics of the plane were for a moment disconnected
2. Stall: when planes fly very high and very fast, shock waves on the wing upper surface could form if the critical Mach number is exceeded. For this reason, a speed margin called coffin corner exists. Imagine the coffin corner is between 250 kts (lowest) and 280 kts (highest). If exceeding 280 kts (critical Mach speed) there is a chance to stall due to mach tuck (as described above) and if flying below 250 kts you stall because air density is so low that there are basically no molecules to create the necessary lift.
That’s why I always remain my fasten seat belt. Speed can drop and rise faster than you think ✌🏼

So glad I haven't traveled in a plane for over 30 years. I don't miss it one bit.

I work at LAX , yesterday was the third time we got the same plane with one of the little compartments behind the turbines sealed with tape instead of the right screws 😂 … this time crew took pictures and make a phone call … yes …. It is a Boeing 777 😉
