You make all the sense! I graduated art school hundreds of years ago, and our acrylic teacher Nathan Ota pressed us to keep black paint off shadows. He taught us to use complimentary color for the shadow - if the light is yellow make the shadow purplish or if the light is white then start with a more bluish shadow. Great job explaining what took me a semester to figure out! 😂

TIP FOR THE PEOPLE THAT FIND THEIR COLORS TO SEEM DULLER/GRAY
You can use cool red and a warm blue to make a vibrant purple, and then you do what she did in the videos.
If you use a warm red and a warm blue together. It tends to make it gray when you add white.
In the video, it looks like she uses a cool blue, a warm red, and a warm yellow, which would make a reddish purple that’s perfect for dark skins. Try and get those colors if you want a realistic skin tone.
TL;DR: Get the cool tones and warm tones of the primary colors to get a full range of colors and skintones

Thanks so much for sharing! Sometimes people who aren't self taught explain things in ways that make sense in a classroom/studio setting, but when you're just trying to figure it out like me skipping all the fancy vocabulary makes the whole learning process a lot faster! Now I know the basic colors I need to play with to figure out skin tones for my paintings
