Gemmell is actually really good hero fantasy. Legend is a big foundation to a lot of modern fantasy. Would definitely recommend giving it a go.

Hell yeah Fighting Fantasy! Freeway Fighter and Rebel Planet were my shit when I was a kid. Steve Jackson wrote some of them as I recall (the guy behind the GURPS system from the 80s - and the Munchkin board game that was almost as big as Catan somehow where I grew up).
Also (19:15) The concept for this book is really similar to a horror movie that I really enjoyed called The Endless. It's made into almost an Eldritch kind of story.

Hey, if you end up liking Gemmell's writting, I'd recommend his Rigante cycle. It's my favorite of his. But I'm surprised you consider Gemmel unknown. Here, in France, his books are everywhere and reedited regularly even though he died in 2006 (he wasn't even 60, sadly). Is he only known in Europe, maybe?
Also, since you're planning on reading Legend, you might want to know he wrote it as a metaphor about cancer. He was misdiagnosed in the 70s. I think it helps understanding the themes and message better to know that ^^

I read part of House of Leaves many years ago. It’s written in a very dense academic style that really made it difficult for my for my impatient teenage self to get through it. I probably should give it another shot.
