While many NFL players treat the pain from the game with weed, some believe it may also protect against deadly brain injury, yet the league barely accepts its use.

This episode of Weediquette first aired on VICE TV in 2016. Weed laws in the US have since changed.

In memoriam: Dr. Lester Grinspoon 1928-2020.

Yeah I played football for many years growing up and suffered concussions... Let me tell you cannabis is really the only thing that helps in terms of dealing with headaches and stress. We have learned over time that even the so-called small dings during practice were basically many concussions and that just adds to the list. Cannabis is so much better than pharmaceuticals and can't imagine life without it

My brother played baseball like a maniac, never stepped out of the way of a ball, no matter how fast it was going, took a lot to the head. There was one point he wasn't just stuttering, he couldn't even talk. He smokes, and he's about as normal as anybody else. I'm sure he's got his issues but watching him going from being unable to say a sentence, to being one of the best car salesman where he works, it's absolutely maddening, that they aren't looking into this.

I stopped playing football my sophomore year of college, after I had a petite mall seizure. I got up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night and I woke up on the floor. Covered in urine and my head had missed the toilet by only a few inches. That was my wake up call that something was going to give. I got out before things went South. Cannabis helped me with stress and the pains that still linger. I'm thankful to live in a state that has legalized it.

Football player, wrestlers, and veterans suffer for either our entertainment or our protection, yet there are people denying them access to THC to help in some way sickens me. I say this a veteran who likes wrestling and has a respect for football players. Things need to change.

My past concussions definitely have affected my mental health, I’ve almost been in a coma and have memory issues. The depression and suicidal thoughts are overwhelming . I’ve only been smoking cannabis since 2019 but with-out it I wouldn’t have made it this far.

Thank you Dr. Grinspoon for taking your time for this interview. You're an absolute saint and a greatly respected man within Cannabis for many, many reasons. Much love.

I’ve smoked weed for 30 years, and did so playing 3 different sports at a high level. Then once every couple of months a little DMT to break the barriers that the brain and eyes block.

Forget the stereotype of the dread loc rastafarian smoking weed. There has always been anecdotal evidence from Jamaicans of its medicinal benefits eg ganja tea for pain relief etc.

Paused @ 00.37. Think about How Many NFL players have been suspended and or Lost their Very Short careers because of Pot then think about about how many X-Players that have struggled lost everything or Died because of Teams pushing Opioids onto players to get through a game or season. Sad Pathetic and Disgusting!!!

my parents found and got me weed as a kid that really struggled with TBIs in hockey, it was truly the only thing that helped anything. it would hurt to sleep, it still does on nights. marijuana does indeed help and the people that it could help could be exponential tbh

Didn't the NFL announce they would no longer be testing for Marinuana? If so that is a huge step forwards!

Cannabis saved my life. Had multiple concussions from playing football and used cannabis throughout. The anti inflammatory properties of it kept my brain from swelling.

Very sad. What's taking so long for the NFL to green light a study? It would only help them.

From Pop Warner to HS to college we were coached to use our heads as weapons.... back in the day. I did it well, too well and I've been paying a heavy price for it for the last 20 years and know that it's not gonna stop until I'm dead, why would anyone deny me? 64 and counting...

I've had encephalopathy last year when I learned I had kidney disease, I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Forgetting who you are down to your name is the scariest thing I've ever gone through, suddenly having no hold on who you are or the world around you is pure hell.
