For those in the US ( and maybe elsewhere, I donāt know where itās available) Calrose rice is an acceptable substitute for sushi rice, and significantly cheaper and easier to find. I get mine at Walmart. Side-by-side I canāt tell the difference between CalRose rice and sushi rice and it tastes delicious..

I can see the difference. The Japanese rice molds faster and easier, it also sticks to the other rice grains easier and doesn't stick to your hand as much. The long grain rice on the other hand sticks to everything other than the other grains of rice. Thank you for making this video, it helped a lot.

Some people in Brazil has the custom to do this with rice and "feijoada", and some cassava farofa, without much problem to mold in hands because have the feijoada moisture. :)
We have "fried onigiri" too, like a fried rice ball snack or breaded rice ball, we call it "bolinho de arroz". Its delicious!

Thank you for this! I wanna try making onigiri but only have long grain rice at home. I'm stubborn so a visual on why this wouldn't work helped get the point across for me
