In recent years, Panerai has become one of the industry leaders when it comes to creating watches from modern materials β fusing its time-honoured dive watch designs with thoroughly contemporary cases, demonstrating how versatile the Radiomir and Luminor can be.
This episode of About Time brings us an up-close look at two recent watches from Paneraiβs Laboratorio di Idee β the Luminor Marina Carbotech (PAM01661) and Luminor Marina TuttoGrigio (PAM01662). We explain why Carbotech, and the 3D-printed titanium of the TuttoGrigio, are such attractive materials for watchmaking, in every possible sense.

I have worn a Pam 661 Carbotech for 2 years now and it is absolutely a "next level" luxury watch making material. I have taken it on over a dozen dives and even hit it off of a bridge pier underwater and it left no marks. If I was wearing my Rolex DSSD, I would have surfaced to a shattered ceramic bezel and a few case dents. The Carbotech is still pristine even under a macro lens. My particular Pam 661 with its hacking p.9010 movement keeps a steady +1.5 second a day and a 80+ hour power reserve. I own a lot of spectacular automatic watches and this Panerai has spoiled me and makes my other SS models feel almost old fashion and fragile in comparison to the Carbotech. Stronger than titanium and more scratch resistant than ceramic. The tactile feel of Carbotrech is hard to describe, maybe a comparison is It reminds me of a light weight damascus steel. Build quality and fit and finish from dial to case is outstanding. There really isnt anything else out there at any price point that compares. For now, the watch is undervalued IMO. I cant say enough superlatives about what Panerai is doing with Carbotech and their in-house p.9010 movement. Think of this watch as a flat black LaFerrari on the wrist. Tremendous performance and wrist presence for those that know, "know".
