In Speak No Evil, a Danish family makes fast friends with a Dutch family on vacation. Months later, they are invited to visit their new friends, and it doesn't take long before the joy of reunion is replaced with uncomfortable misunderstandings. The awkwardness eventually passes the point of social acceptability, leaving us wondering just how much with Bjorn and Louise put up with? We're breaking down the story, including the important character dynamics at play, as well as explaining meaning of the infuriating ending.

All Bjorn had to do was tell his daughter the bunny is gone. They were practically home free at the point.

I love how Bjorn didn't give a shit about his daughters school performance but was willing to go back for an easily replaceable stuffed animal when it would clearly risk their safety.

Wow. The amount of chances they had to escape this makes me wonder how many other families actually did escape by choosing to heed the warning signs

This concept is very real. People are so scared to seem unpolite that they will even put themselves in danger. Makes sense they would make a horror movie out of that.

The whole "stay with us" is basically a test where they prove if a family is passive enough to being abuse. They are predators, and predators have a pretty keen eye to detect the weaknesses they can exploit. If the family stand their ground, they probably can leave without harm, but if a family remains silent to the awkwardness is when they act and kill. Also they probably just act when they get bored of their new "child", that is more like a pet, maybe thats why they were progressively more abusive with Abel towards the end.

I find it interesting that some people have a difference between being stupid characters from bad writing or stupid characters because they’re trying to make a point. And I think this is a good example of a movie having stupid characters to make a point

This was definitely a cautionary tale. I have told my kids since very young, trust your gut! Don’t worry about being polite when your gut is telling you something is wrong, even if you can’t put your finger on the exact reason why.

The fact that Bjorn and Louise are stoned is quite telling of how they're perceived by their killers. They were stoned for their misdeeds which to me is thier lack of protective instincts of their daughter. I mean what parents take their child to a home of strangers? They knew nothing about them, and even after all their disturbing behavior, they still decided to stay.

The parents just standing there at the end ALLOWING rocks to be thrown at them couldn’t anger me more than it did. Not one time did I ever see any guns or any other type of weapon. How could you possibly let your own daughter be taken when the attackers aren’t even armed..? SMH

I feel your rage. I was actually enraged by the end of THIS video. Basically this Father had no balls. Period. It's always ok to say NO, even if somebody is being "polite".

As a Scandinavian, you have NO idea how funny (in a super-dark way) the first half of this movie is. It basically deconstructs our most pathetic stereotypes and flaws, and makes the characters go to hell for it!

As the saying goes, "You can't truly be peaceful unless you are capable of great violence. If you can't choose violence, you aren't peaceful but harmless."

I think this movie is actually trying to make you hate the parents of the girl because they're just not doing what they're supposed to do to protect her. They want you to hate them more than you hate the actual killers.

At least the girl has her bunny toy in the end. That bunny toy is very important. 😂😂😂

I think there is a lot of social commentary here as well. When people do nothing and are pushed and pushed without fighting back eventually you end up in a point of no return. If you are in a bad relationship, you can't keep ignoring the problem or justifying it because that will never solve the problem. You have to take a stand and leave but it's difficult.

As a dad of two, this was the hardest watch since the "baby scene" in Trainspotting. Be a guardian, parents; It's damn near your only job after they're born.

As a Dane, I can tell you that, yes, the politeness is infuriating but it’s also very true to our culture. We don’t want to seem rude or as if we’re being culturally rude, so we force the politeness until it pretty much breaks our backs. Honestly, I could only watch this once, and I don’t think I’ll ever watch it again, but I’m really happy that danish movies are getting some international credit!

This is the only movie that ever made me scream at the screen "How can you people be so stupid ?!" And I've seen alot of movies with stupid people. But now that I think about it, it's probably the reaction the film makers wanted from the audience, I guess it worked.

"Because you let us." What a perfect summation of both sides of the human animal.

There's also the fact that they immediately go after new kids seemingly before they decide to kill the one they have, So it isn't like they just want a child, they intend to just keep trading in for a new child constantly, regardless of how the child "behaves."
