So awesome to see all the love this album gets. This is the best original music project I was ever involved with. I learned so much about music production from working with Devin in the studio, especially layering vocals. He made me believe in myself as a vocalist and a musician. I sang the main back up vocals in "Wrong Side" and was part of all the back up gang vocals (the death metal choir!). I also played most of they keyboards/strings/samples and got to sit in while Mike Fraser mixed this album down. It has the most polished sound of any SYL album, some love it for that fact and some hate on it. It certainly has huge dynamic range. I had a stellar car stereo in my Volvo at the time and Gene and I would sit out there, smoke one and listen to the mixes as they came down the pipe to compare them to the ones from Alien. We both agreed The New Black destroyed any previous SYL album as far as sonic clarity goes. I don't really talk to the guys anymore other than the odd Facebook post but I look back on the making of this album as one of the proudest moments in my musical career. Willy the Keyboard Guy
