Canadian singer-songwriter Lauren Spencer Smith has had a crazy few years — from getting her start on American Idol, to going viral on TikTok with her hit song Fingers Crossed, all while she attended high school on Vancouver Island. Now, she’s releasing her debut album, Mirror, which looks back on these experiences. She tells Tom about going on American Idol without the intention of winning, what it was like performing in front of some of the world’s biggest stars in music, and why she thinks her song Fingers Crossed became a viral hit on TikTok.

Lauren, I found you through Spotify while listening to a Corook playlist during a walk. I stopped in my tracks and immediately followed you on Spotify because your song spoke to my soul as I am navigating grey rocking the narsassist in my life. Your music is amazing! I felt so seen and validated. You will go far!

I only listened to this because of Lauren but I’m so glad I did. I love this guy as an interviewer. He seems truly interested and so genuine. Definitely going to subscribe and start watching more!

These were such good questions and felt like a genuine meaningful conversation. I think if she teased Fingers Crossed now it would still blow up. Maybe not as much as during the pandemic but it would still resonate because we can all relate on some level.

I'm glad Shawn Mendes is definitely not one of those artists she mentions who had all their money stolen by bad management lol. I think it's a bit odd that she's openly stating she went on the show without intending to win. So she basically just took a slot from other competitors who truly wanted to win just because? Hm. Interesting. Anyway, her album is truly mindblowing- it's crazy! I'll have to let people know what I think of each and every track. Great interview :)

I love that they're calling out the show for the shitty contracts they force contestants into. 🤣🤣🤣

Lol winning these shows is actually worse. No wonder so many of the people even drop out of the show after getting the recog they deserve. The contracts are just laughable.
