About 14-15 years ago my sister asked me if I liked Macy Gray? I told her I had only heard very little of her music! I then listened to her but honestly I just didn't get her! Her voice wasn't clear, I didn't hear riffs and runs like traditional R&B, soulful music! I didn't hear the warmth and experience I'd become accustomed to with Natalie Cole, Chaka Khan, and many others before her! I hadn't attempted to listen to her anymore.
For some reason, unbeknownst to me I went online and looked her up! The first song I played was "Relating to a Psychopath" well..... I had to play it again and again! I could relate and it hit home!!! I've been listening to her since 8:30am this morning and now it's 12:26pm and I'm in deep. Still, Creep, I wanna see you again, I Try, Sweet Baby, I love them all! I love her! Although she doesn't sound like Billie Holiday there is a similarity, feeling and life's experiences, vulnerability, honesty in her delivery, she's real! She doesn't possess a huge powerful voice, but is small, petite, sweet, emotional, like Helen Humes and Billie Holiday but modern soulful, she swings and most importantly for me her music breaths, there's space which allows the listener to process what they've just heard! Her phrasing is everything! I also enjoy her relationship with her band and audience! She's fun, but the lyrics in her music are profound you must pay attention! She's kookie and whimsical, fun yet profoundly adorable too! I enjoyed every song! Glad I made the time and to know her musically, I dig her!!! When my critical jazz musician friends have anything to say about her I'll let them know the truth she grooves and is a baaaad Asssss artists! Period!
