Star Citizen is making a silly decision with it's monetization towards new players, and it's driving away potential backers.

After continuously playing SC for about almost four years, I completely agree. SC is too unstable for this kind of monetization, and this sale reeks of greed and bad faith on CIG’s part. The only way this would make sense is to make this gear, the default gear that pre-populate when your character dies.

The first thing I did when I started playing Star Citizen was get into my ship, lift off the ground, and then accidentally crash straight into the wall. I couldn't imagine losing $10 of equipment in the first few moments of a game. That's a good way to upset a lot of incoming new players.

This is more than egregious, it's telling. The fact that a mistake like this could even be made is a massive red flag.

At first I didn't get the problem, because I subconsciously assumed you get to keep what you paid for, but you're absolutely right! Any new players are going to lose their 10$ before they even get to use it. Probably by falling through the floor of the very first elevator they enter...

Every year that we get more comfortable with "Ten years, no game", CIG gets more comfortable with seeing us as dollar signs instead of as a community.

It's a good point, something that didn't occur to me at all because as a vet, I know I can always go buy armour. But a newbie isn't going to know how liquid equipment can be.

This was 100% my reaction, as well, when I saw this on the store. I actually closed the website at that point and shook my head and haven't been back to the game. I can't say that this was a conscious decision on my part. I simply have other games to play, but in hindsight it's a big part of why I haven't bothered since. 🤔

Agreed 100%. This seems almost predatory, with new players being the victim. The marketing team ought to walk this one back somehow, and in future use more imagination and foresight.

This is so true. I would hate to see CIG go down the same path as Wizards of the Coast. Alienating your player base is a horrible idea.

Completely agree - CIG marketing should be ashamed of themselves for thinking this was acceptable. They are approaching this like it is a fully complete game, with a decent tutorial and everything, whist the other half of the company is like "it's still an Alpha..." Can't have it both ways

I think your recommendation is a strong one. The fact that we still don't have a vendor to get back items that people spent real money on is a core cause of this concern. Getting a boost after the new player experience is a great rec.

Thank you for using your platform to put this problem out to more people.

100% agree to this whole video. I don't want to be disgusted by CIG and quit, but every day it grows stronger inside me...

Have to say, I 100 procent agree. Selling personal items that you can't claim is a really bad idea.

Absolutely agree. For more than a decade, I've played Eve Online, Elite Dangerous, PlanetSide 2 and am currently looking forward to Starfield, but hadn't managed to check out Star Citizen. I took this free fly event as my chance. One of the first things I did was to buy some neat looking armor and a gun. Then, within 10 minutes I turned on autopilot inside a hangar... I thought, ok that's dumb, but mostly my fault... However, I woke up with my gear. So, I tried again, this time I plowed into a planet while fighting an NPC in an atmosphere, and woke up in a blue gown... Then I tried to go back to the planet and pick up my gear, while trying to navigate to the mark that supposedly was telling me where my remains were, I crashed into the dark side of the same planet... Pretty much zero warning. While this was frustrating and the end of that session, I did NOT pay cash for my troubles. If I had, this experience would have been MUCH worse... I'm still not sure if SC is ready for my attention. It's pretty rough around the edges. Directions and maps are severely lacking, but I know there are resources out there for that. There is so much potential here, but as a first time experience goes... "Yikes!" Let's try not to add easy to lose cash grabs to that experience...

It's things like these that makes me think the folks at CIG (especially in the marketing department) don't play their own game. Even if they do play, I think they're so far removed from the new player experience, they can no longer relate. They need to get new people in to play the game and record them, to get a good understanding of what the new player experience is like and where they need to improve the game.

Very well said, I agree. Not to mention the gear they give you is the cheap gear you can just buy at shops in game.

Bad decisions, bad priorities and bad leadership! Totally agree. Getting your bought items back or just a working inventory, should be a top priority. If this was the first time they made a bad decision, I could understand, but it happens again and again with CIG. It's like they never learn and never improve. It's all about money money and more money and then screw everything else. I love SC, but I can't stand the way they run the development.

Totally agree, I spent hours watching new player guides, reviews and gameplay before I picked the game up a few years ago, and I still died in the first play session. Also I cannot count the number of times I've spawned without my gear or died in my bed due to some bug, imagine losing paid gear as a new player due to a bug, you'd want your money back and would never play again. This stinks of greed on CIGs part and definitely sours my taste in them.

My very first time I got on Star Citizen I got in my Avenger Titan after looking for the Spaceport for an hour and accidentally hit the eject button while trying to figure out how to turn it on. I was immediately splattered onto the ceiling. This is absolutely predatory, and a scumbag move by CIG
