Regarding how the Reaver works now; remember that the entity that was trapped in the Reaver (now fixed to Raziel's arm) was a soul-devouring entity. Now it's awake, it will consume the souls of any enemy you kill with it, rousing it further (the circle around your health bar). Three kills in quick succession will be enough to fill the circle, at which point it'll start draining Raziel's health.
The payoff is that the Reaver gets stronger as it's fed, a more than half-filled circle means it's strong enough to kill even endgame enemies in one or two blows (which is often worth the health cost, particularly later in the game).

The Sanctuary of the Clans in the first Soul Reaver is above ground, it's at the very same place where Kain's speech about the coin took place. It was built during the empire and Kain made the Pillar of Balance as his throne. The room you just entered? Completly new for you. This room is under the Pillars. Hell, these ARE the Pillars. Just as they go high in the sky, nobody knows how deep they go in the ground x)

So glad to see that you've started this one so soon after completing 'Soul Reaver.' This is arguably the best in the entire series. I've no doubt you'll absolutely love it...
By the way, the very first room in which you find yourself with Moebius is the room in which Vorador slaughtered Circle members in the original Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. You'll see many more locations that were either seen or mentioned in previous titles... ;)
Edit: If you kill an enemy using the Soul Reaver, the blade itself devours the souls without giving you a chance to consume them yourself. It was alluded to earlier during Raziel's meeting with Moebius at the tomb of William the Just, but after having met its former self and restoring the physical blade, it has become 'ravenous'. Bear in mind that the mechanics of the blade have changed since the original 'Soul Reaver' game.
Also, the storytelling is absolutely superb which is made even more impressive by the fact that the story, from the moment that you begin this game, has no resemblance to the original, cut second half of the original 'Soul Reaver' game. ;)
Edit #2: Keep an eye on that second gauge that circles your health bar. It grows when you use the Soul Reaver or when it consumes souls. There's a reason for that, and it's to stop you from over-relying on the blade, becoming overpowered... ;)
Edit #3: The final room in which you find yourself, the Subterranean Ruins, is not the same place in which Kain builds his throne. This room lies beneath, underground. The clearest indicator of this is the fact that the platform upon which the Pillars stand is different, along with their inscribed runes. This room has not been seen before this point throughout the series...

At least SR1 cliffhanger made you play the sequel right away, so there's that! đ
Seriously, it's wonderful watching you react to the lore and story, it's indeed like playing it again for the 1st time. Thank you!
Can't wait to see the rest of the game and the franchise.
Just keep in mind that Blood Omen 2 is by far the weakest in the franchise in terms of story (it's not catastrophic by any mean though), plus BO2 is not really mandatory to understand the whole story before Defiance, but I'm sure you're gonna play it anyway.
In the meantime, enjoy SR2 lore fest!

Malek and Mortanius are the other two survivors of Vorador's attack. Until Soul Reaver two we didn't know who was the third survivor of Vorador's attack on the circle. In the first Blood Omen Mortanius is seen punishing Malek for failing the other six members of the circle by binding Malek's soul to his armour.

Ah, you've arrived at my favourite in the series, which puts it pretty damn high on my list of favourite games of all time. I'm so glad you're playing these. It's so great to get to relive them. And you're in for a real treat with this one. The story is so good! This game is going to repeatedly blow your mind.

I can't tell you how profoundly satisfying it is to watch someone relish not only the story, but the superb narration and dialogue too! Truly, the writing for this entire series is a sumptuous "feast", as you said. I once had an opportunity to gush to Amy Hennig about this, and she seemed most gratified to have the writers' magniloquence aptly appreciated :)

Okay, this play through is earning the full trio of like, comment, and subscribe. I cannot emphasise enough just how gloriously happy Iâve been watching someone experience it the way I did - with an emphasis on analysis over âperfectâ playing, just getting wholly immersed in the story and loving every second of the glorious script and incredible voice acting. I blasted through this game in about eight hours when it first came out and then rambled with enthusiasm at my Mum and a visiting aunt about the ending for a good twenty minutes after I finished! Itâs still my favourite video game story of all time, and watching you laugh and gasp and grab your head or chin in thought/astonishment/etc has filled me with a joy I havenât known in years. Thank you, sincerely, for this. Iâm autistic and havenât hand-flapped with happiness in a good while; this video changed that and I canât wait to watch the rest.
(Also, I canât believe I never picked up on the idea that of COURSE a guardian of balance would be able to balance a coin on its edge!!!)

I love how at the very moment Mapo first heard "The Heart of Darkness" all the memories and the trauma came back to his body
