in 6th grade, my classmate and best friend, bridgette, died in a house fire along with 5 of her siblings. police reports stated it was a space heater that short circuited and set the house ablaze. for a long time, i didn't believe it. i thought someone had set the house on fire, and killed her and her siblings.
i remember my class getting the news, and me rushing out in the hallway screaming and kicking the wall. it was the darkest time of my entire life.
i fell into a deep depression, losing interest in nearly everything. without bridgette there, i didn't find as much joy as i previously did when hanging out with my friend group. i remember crying for hours nearly every day, blaming the world for her death, silently screaming at whatever false, paltry god existed for allowing her and her family to die undeservedly.
nearly 3 and a half years later, therapy and the support of my friends helped me overcome my depression and regain the happiness i had once lost. i relearned joy and excitement once again, with my friends at my side. i learned to move on.
now i'm in high school, and i have more happiness than i'll ever know what to do with.
bridgette, if you're reading this, i'll never forget you. thank you for all the time you spent with me. what a roundabout path it's been.
