This is the answer to everyone who thinks that traditional metal has to be formulaic, stale, and predictable. This is by far the most unique and bizarre pure heavy metal album in recent years. The mix of super clean airy sound production, galloping riffs, satire preachy lyrics, and pop-ish/"unmetal" vocals works unbelievably great. The trend of goth vocals in traditional metal in recent years (Unto Others) never worked for me, but this, this is something else
Even though it is tongue in cheek throughout, especially over the spoken word bits, it never comes across as parody or caricature, just pushed to the limit of satire and criticism. I would happily take those lyrics literally, it wouldn't change a bit how much I enjoy this thing. Sometimes you get parody bands that musically are up there with the bands that they make fun of (e.g. Nanowar). This here is a completely different beast. These guys are not taking the piss, but - in terms of aesthetics - they are not serious either. They are superb though in every aspect -including lyrics and general atmosphere. I've no idea how it works, it just does.
