Reanimating Kubrick in Operation Avalanche | The Process

We go behind the scenes of Operation Avalanche, a faux-documentary narrative following CIA agents tasked with faking the moon landing. As part of the research and creating a believable fake, the agents visit the set of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, blurring all boundaries between film and reality. By framing their film as a period documentary, these filmmakers created a unique challenge for themselves: How to have their characters interacting with the real Kubrick in archival footage. Here, we see how director Matt Johnson and his team were able re-create this ultra meta world from archival stills with amazing ingenuity and creativity, virtual space, 3D projections, and green screens.

Watched this a few weeks into the new year and still tell people about it. It honestly doesn't feel like 11 months since I did. Most of it is still pretty clear in my mind. The scenes with Kubrick are outstanding and I had no idea they were so innovative to do.

I hope the final product doesn't have such crisp audio. The kind of sound quality just shown makes it feels like a less authentic portrayal. Visually, it's fine, damn near perfect in looking old, but if it sounds brand new it won't really matter how old it looks because it would feel new, which would kinda destroy the purpose of a movie like this.
