this is like when someone says a joke and nobody hears it and then someone else says it louder and everybody laughs

Anyone else feel bad when the original artists are relatively unheard of? ETA: For those still nitpicking my comment nearly a year later (lol)... I am speaking in comparison. Like, there are many cover songs where a general audience has never heard of the original version. Sometimes regardless if you are familiar with the original artist or not.

This was so cool! I wonder how the original artists feel about covers getting more popular than their songs

Love that several of the originals were quite big too.

Some of these didn't even try to hide the fact it was a cover. The Don't Cha songs are identical šŸ˜…

its interesting listening to the ones that were covered decades later because they evoke different feelings based on which decade they were from due to the music trends at the time

One of my favorite examples of this is Istanbul (Not Constantinople) by They Might Be Giants, which is a cover of a song by an obscure 60s vocal pop group called The Four Lads. I like both versions a lot honestly.

The transition between the cover and the original for Donā€™t Cha was practically seamless

It isnā€™t technically a cover, but Gangstaā€™s Paradise is a modernized rap version of Stevie Wonderā€™s Pastime Paradise It a littler known song by Stevie and itā€™s honestly pretty good

It's wild how some of these came out so close to the originals, it's like somebody repeating your joke louder and getting all the laughs šŸ’€

The original of ā€œTornā€ was by Lis Sorensen in 1993, followed by the Ednaswap version in 1995. (Although Ednaswap did write it, they released their version after Lis)

I knew about Dolly Parton and Whitney Houston , and the Neil Diamond oneā€¦. but wasnā€™t aware of any others. Great video, thank you for making this.

In my opinion, the whole point of artists covering songs and making them hits should be; "Hey guys, here's my big hit. Now that I've got your attention, go check out the original that was released years ago that deserved to be massive, but wasn't so I decided to give it a brand new life." OR "Hey, this old song sounds kinda like something that would be big today, let's revamp it a bit", NOT "Oh this song was big for that artist, let me just copy them"

The sign of a good cover: it does something new with the existing song.

Without You is a bit of a cursed song. Its two original writers from Badfinger died a or so decade apart, at their own hands, Harry Nilsson who first covered it died young, from his alcohol addiction and Mariah Carey sang after a divorce and unnecessary upset herself. It one of those melancholy filled songs, that best not sung by people with issues.

'I Love Rock 'n' Roll', 'It's My Life', 'Mad World'. I'd heard the original versions of them before realizing they were re-done by other people lol.
