Five men in total intimacy together. If only the world could be like something even approaching this it would be wonderful thing.

If I were spending twenty years alone in outer space and I could only take one piece of music with me, this would be it.

The finest work of all chamber music. Schubert is a real genius. He composed several greatest works in western music history during his last years of life. It is a miracle.

WOW. What an emotional and amazing situation they made. Return of the former 35 years member! Great to see this. They made a disc of that masterpiece with the great Slava, and the disc is still my all-time favorite.

There is a mathematical enigma here. This string quintet, which has been a favourite of mine for more than half a century, clearly requires five players; but in this utterly outstanding performance, a single heart beats throughout, and a single soul sings. I have never heard the like of it. (And I notice, in this church setting, that the signs for "PEACE" and "HOPE" have been unceremoniously stashed away in a corner, as though in recognition of the fact that in Schubert's all-encompassing vision, such banal slogans have no place in the expression of true sublimity. Thank you, thank you.

Emerson is able to play with deep feeling without schmaltz or sentimentality. The performance is clear, direct, patient, and assured, with nothing to prove to anyone. This gives it a deep spiritual quality, as if all unessentials have been left behind, leaving only the music's pure, timeless soul. Is there any way this recording could be made available for download or purchase?
