I was a teenager when this came out and didn’t read the book first. I was a huge Shia LaBeouf fan because of Even Stevens and Tru Confessions so not seeing this film was out of the question lol. The warden being a female TOTALLY took me by surprise. Let alone it being Sigourney Weaver. Excellent introduction to her character because right until it gets to her blouse you thought it was a male...well if you haven’t read the book first. Wonderful book and fantastic film. My sister and I were OBSESSED with this dvd; we watched it the audio commentary all the time and wore out the special features. Gosh, 2003 was a dang good year for Disney. This and Finding Nemo came out in theatres and it brings back a lot of good memories.
The 2000s were a magical time.

Something I actually like about this scene is that, in the book, most of the observations we get are from Stanley's point of view and a couple of those observations are shown through an inner monologue. When he first meets the warden, he admits in his head that he assumed the warden had been a man and didn't realize it was a lady. In this scene, they set it up for those who haven't read the book. So by saying "Hey, Lou," (probably short for Louise), and keeping the camera down and slowly panning up, it gives the audience the same observation and surprise as Stanley, which is a really cool idea. So new audiences get a fun surprise and those who read the book get a cool introduction to Warden Walker!

VERY fitting entrance for her. PERIOD. I loved this book in school and I was THRILLED when they released the movie. And the cinematography for her entrance is on point. I love that they shot her feet up until she was right beside Pendansky. I think maybe to keep viewers from realizing the warden was a woman? Either way. This is literally my favorite part of this movie. Everything on point.
