Merry Christmas everyone! We hope you all have a very blessed Advent and Christmas season!

Here is our version of the classic Christmas Song, "Coventry Carol." We hope you enjoy it:)

My brother arranged the piece. My family sang it.

Please no bad language in the comments. We want this to be family friendly:)

Lyrics:

Refrain:
Lully, lullay, thou little tiny child,
Bye bye, lully, lullay.

O sisters too, how may we do
For to preserve this day
This poor youngling for whom we sing,
"Bye bye, lully, lullay"? R.

Herod the king, in his raging,
Chargèd he hath this day
His men of might in his own sight
All young children to slay. R.

That woe is me, poor child, for thee
And ever mourn and may
For thy parting neither say nor sing,
"Bye bye, lully, lullay." R.

This song is not really for christmas but for the massacre of all young children by Herod, which we commemorate on january, 2nd. This is the last lullaby the mothers who lost their children on this nightmarish day will ever sing to them. It is a very beautiful song filled with sadness and love : a last goodbye.

The slaying of the innocents was part of Mary's grief in the second sorrow of the "Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows" the "The flight into Egypt."

The song was from an olde English play that went though the Christmas story from Matthew Ch 2, and this song was the lament of you will for the children Herod killed in his attempt to secure his position from the Messiah that they assumed would come and dethrone Rome. Beautiful song and the arrangement is incredible.

I am immensely glad that this exists, now if only the radio stations would play things like this instead of hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, which is of course not at all a Christmas song.

Wonderful! Your carols are always the best, and I am continually impressed by your commitment to the Gospel and the truths of Christianity! The Lord has blessed us greatly with your voices singing this carol. May He bless us all this Advent in ways we never imagined.

I remember singing this song in chorus back in the 1960s. They left out the verses about killing babies, though. So I was always puzzled about why it was a sad song. In the version we sang, only the first and last verses were included. I remember the last verse being: β€œOh, woe is me, poor child for thee, And ever mourn and pray. For thy parting, no say nor sing, Bye bye lullee lullay” If memory serves, we sang it as a madrigal. I remember it having an intricate sound.
