This is my conversation with Sonia Bernardo. It took place on 4/26/23 from her home near London.
Sonia is a British-Portuguese singer/songwriter that has been pricking ears with her powerful soulful voice, tinged with a Fado weep, mixed with Bossa-Nova simplicity and jazzy embellishments. Bernardo caught the attention of Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music) who saw her play in a bar and invited her to record on his album āSound of Blue' and then go on to tour with him to Japan. She performs her bi-lingual repertoire, including āSozinhoā which Phil Manzanera featured on his recent āSongs That Made meā selection on LatinoLife.
Born in London to Portuguese parents, before being uprooted and moved against her will to a tiny village in rural Portugal, Bernardo started writing music at the age of 10, imitating the greats of Fado: the traditional Portuguese music she grew up with. When the Indie wave hit the UK, the rebellious teenager followed the sound back to London, where she began honing her craft as a producer and guitarist, and word of her incredible voice and song writing skill began to catch on.
