You know that trope in media; the ‘antagonist-antihero lost a sibling young and that’s why they are like they are’. You know the characters; the Mikaelson Siblings and Henrik, Hannibal Lecter and Misha, Erik Northman and… was his baby sister even given a name?
The point is, I keep finding a recurring theme of main characters' siblings who are relegated to the title of ‘plot device’, seemingly used as a justification and then forgotten, never to be heard of again (or until they need that justification for ‘hey! They’re not so bad, it’s not their fault they lost their light when they lost their sibling’ again) and I’m tired of it. Mainly because I keep hyper-focusing on these forgotten siblings, and scouring the archives for stories where they come back; either force themself back to life, make a deal with death, or just reincarnated and are thus reunited with their family. But I can’t seem to find those stories. And as it doesn’t look like I’ll get back into writing anytime soon, I decided to try making one of my many many ideas into a playlist. I think the success was… middling.
Rant over, lol. Below is the basic plot line I have in my mind for this playlist which I think gives a little more context to things.
ENJOY!
(And if you end up writing/reading anything similar, please let me know. I’m dying for new fics, lol)
STORYLINE:
The main character’s younger sister died suddenly, leaving the main character with trauma and motivation for their life path. Same as usual. But the younger sister doesn’t want to move on. She watches her sibling, just wanting to see them grow up, move on, and be happy before she goes. But her sibling doesn’t do that, and the more time that passes, the less their sister wants to leave.
So she makes a deal with a dark force, offering her service in return for being corporeal again. She loses a part of herself in this, but she doesn’t let it hold her back for long as she experiences all the joys and hardships and complicated brilliance of the world once more. Finally, she reunites with her sibling, and it all seems so perfect, even if it takes her a little while to convince them that it’s really her and that she’s really back. But as the sister tries to integrate herself into her sibling’s life, she realizes that maybe things have finally changed. Maybe her sibling doesn’t need her to watch over them anymore. Maybe it’s time.
She’s not ready, she doesn’t think she ever will be. But she and her sibling finally have closure from their shared trauma, and she knows they’ll be alright this time around. Even with her gone, they’ll never be alone. She lingers as much as she can but can hear the afterlife calling and, eventually, she knows; if she’s going to go, she should go.
