At least 68 people were injured, mostly while trying to flee homes. Footage released by Turkish private broadcaster TGRT shows how night-time anchorman Ersel Hoskara coninued presenting as the quake was felt in Istanbul while the graphic underneath him read 'Breaking news: moment of the earthquake live on air'. The earthquake was centered in the town of Golkaya, in Duzce province, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) east of Istanbul, the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency said.

I’m in CALIFORNIA and I’m positive we’ve NEVER HAD ONE LIKE A 7.8. WOW..when I was a child I was in front of our neighborhood CHURCH when a 6.9 hit and I remember hearing glass break, the smashing of small structures and I looked at the ground as it waved. I hope everyone there recovers quickly. 🙇🏻‍♀️🙏🏽🫶🏽

Im from Turkey too! We were also very calm during earthquake because we knew what is happening and we cant do much about it. My mom always told me to be very calm in these situations, she didnt show any fear or emotion, she was very brave when shes taking us out of house. And all other parts of our rescue process. She gave me confidence. Shes my idol! And its true, being calm is the number one thing if you are in a survive situation.

For those who don't know, the epicentre of that earthquake was near Düzce, a city that is 240 km to the west of Ankara, and 228 km to the east of İstanbul. As for the earthquake itself, it was the most violent one since the 2020 Aegean Sea earthquake, which I had actually experienced.

For those visiting or living in Turkiye - the whole country is a high risk zone for earthquakes. In Istanbul and the region around it, magnitude 7.2 or higher earthquakeS are expected (64% probability, risk increasing every day). So please make sure that the buildings you stay in (hotel, home, work, hospital, school etc) are built according to regulations (demand to see the paperwork etc). Know that a huge disaster can happen at any moment; a devastating earthquake where thousands of buildings will collapse, no electricity, no communication systems, no water, no gas, with almost all roads blocked, no health services, huge panic = no consular services for a significant amount of time, you are basically on your own. Also stay away from coastal areas as tsunamis are expected after large earthquakes.

For your information, this was not THE EARTHQUAKE of 7,8 in Maras. It is an older earthquake
