Stan is claimed by the East Coast, Central Canada, the Prairies, and the West Coast--all because he travelled and understood this country. And Northwest Passage was once voted the Great Canadian Song. Extraordinary artist.

Rogers' death deserves a mention, as it was in keeping with who he was. As I recall the story (which is how all stories about folk singers should begin), he was flying home from a gig, and after they had landed and were taxiing to the gate, a fire broke out. Stan could easily have made it off the plane in an orderly manner, but he paused to help some travelers who were in difficulty, and ended up dying of smoke inhalation. A hero of a song writer (try not getting choked up by the Mary Ellen Carter or The Jennie C.), but a hero in life as well.

Jack White performed in Nova Scotia, where I live, he ended the show with his own rendition of Barrett's Privateers and it was AWESOME me and the rest of the stadium were stood stomping and singing along. God I wish there was a recording of it.

Iā€™ve been on the Sea Shanty train for years now, and Iā€™m psyched that everyone is discovering them! Even though Iā€™m a yank, I love Stan Rodgers. He was something truly special

ā€œAnd you, to whom adversity has dealt the final blow With smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go Turn to, and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain And like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise againā€ -Stan Rogers

Fun fact this song was partially written as a joke according to stans brother and his band would often sing parodies on stage to see if the drunken crowd would notice

Northwest Passage might be the song that all the musicians join in for during the Singing Stan block every year at the festival in Canso, but this is the one sung on bar decks, in dorm rooms, and at kitchen parties. Cheers from Nova Scotia.

When I was a teenager (early 2000s), my uncle owned an M&M Meat Shop in Canmore, Alberta and I was helping him work the Christmas rush. He put this song on loud over the system, and one by one, the customers (who had all been singing along as they waited) would hand me their purchases to ring through and explain their connection to the Maritimes ("my husband is from Shediac," "I went to University at Dalhousie," "I was born in New Glasgow, I'm here working in oil and gas," "we are Acadien on my mum's side"). It is one of my favourite and most Canadian memories.

Sundayā€™s at the Lower Deck in Halifax listening to Signal Hill, screaming Barrettā€™s at the top of our lungs. Some of the best memories of my 20ā€™s. Happy to be an honorary Bluenoser!

Iā€™m an American, and Iā€™ve always loved Stanā€™s music; I even have one if his records. I hope the internet doesnā€™t make his music a meme like itā€™s done to other classics.

A fascinating look into Canada's cultural history. A sea shanty is always something larger than life, and they're very interesting to listen to
