Nintendo. Beloved video game company. Safe. Warm. Nurturing.

For anyone who has played video games, this Japanese company has a very special place in our hearts. Gamers of all ages get nostalgic thinking about that first time playing Mario, Donkey Kong, or Zelda. But what if I told you that this company has a much, much darker history.

That’s right, much like Disney and movies, once you push past Nintendo’s family-friendly image, the company’s practices start to paint a different picture. From their treatment of their own employees, to destroying the communities who play their games, it becomes quickly apparent that Nintendo, the billion dollar corporation that defined your childhood, isn’t the fatherly figure they make themselves out to be. Today, we’ll be exploring some of the unethical things that Nintendo has done over the years, and present a different angle of this beloved developer.

This is the dark side of Nintendo

Terrible online, underpowered hardware, terrible treatment of fan projects, consumer hostile. But dayum do they have Mario.

Did you know that, despite Nintendo's hostility towards modding, homebrew, and rom hacking, you can mod your 3DS? It's surprisingly easy to do.

A month ago, I committed the most abhorrent sin according to Nintendo's eyes. I pirated and emulated GameCube games on Dolphin. And did not feel guilty. At all.

This is why I love SEGA where they actually encourage their fans to make fan games, heck even praising their fans for making fanart, fan games, and fan films

Rule of thumb with big multi-national gaming companies: There are always a few good actors that make everything better, but the corporate folks are demons.

Nothing about their behavior during the 80's? Demanding 3 year exclusivity for any game released on NES, preventing retailers from slashing prices on games...

As part of the melee community it’s nice to see everyone else seeing the kind of shit we’ve been putting up with for well over a decade

One thing I can't stand is the instinct of nintendo fans to come to the defense saying "it's within their legal rights" to make the competitive smash scene and nintendo content creator's life a living hell when their actions harm their reputation, don't benefit them financially and don't protect anything since they are not producing a lot of the old products that people want to play.

Watching Nintendo try to tackle piracy and modding is truly among the most hilarious events of this generation.

Combines the worst of Disney and the worst of Apple while having an outdated company policy made by old Japanese people. Nintendo is my childhood, but I'll always miss the the GC era Nintendo.

As a nintendo gamer: Nintendo is like a japanese step dad who acts warm and nice when you first meet him, he convinces your mom he's a family man, hard working, studious, and has a big heart. Then a few years go by, he is passive aggressive, he yells at you for tiny things, sometimes you feel he can't stand you just being in the same room as him, he communicates in all but words that he hates you, he did go to your little league baseball game a couple times, but mostly to win points with mom and tell you your trash and need to play better. Then once you're a teenager, you get into a fight and he kicks you out of your home. A few year later, you come back home to find he and mom have taken to foster care, and let me tell you, they love those little foster kids more then they ever loved you. That's been my experience with nintendo

No company is on your side. They will only be on your side (temporarily) if you pay them or you run it.

Nintendo back in the 80's, 90's used to work with the Yakuza, there was even a weird incident where all of the prototypes or materials for a rival console were robbed suddenly, I can't remember if it was the mega drive or the Sega Genesis

I used to play smash in high school back in the late 2000s and I ended up quiting smash because they would shut down locals. THEY KILLED THEIR OWN GAME. Funny enough 6 years later Blizzard would do the same with Overwatch. That is a riiiiip

Do you remember how Nintendo prohibited the winner of the Smash tournament on EVO Japan to be rewarded money and only gave them a golden Pro Controller?

Some food for thought, since they've become too big to fail, it'd take a countrywide boycott just to significantly impact their bottom-line, and it'll take more than that to convince them to change their ways.
