Man I always come across different ones on here who criticizes Joey Castillo's playing style. Yeah he did at times play 'em a lil faster than other drummers thruout QOTSA's history but I don't think that's an accident or something that messed up their sound when playing live. I mean shit, I'm sure Josh would've put an end to that quick with how on point he is with the band's sound/performance. Btw, Castillo did go thru a lot more drumsticks than other drummers of QOTSA's past. Even got so lucky as to get 1 of those drumsticks handed to me by the man himself at a 'private' show they did in Covington, KY back in 2003. Was only about a hundred people up in this small room that were all contest winners off radio etc. Pretty sure me and the other person with me were the only ones from Louisville, KY there. What did suck (if there was anything to actually claim that'd suck at something like this) was that Josh was the only 1 absent of the group. Castillo, Oliveri, Van Leeuwen & Lanegan was who performed a total of 9 trks. After show though, Nick and Mark handed me their setlists & Joey came around drums to hand me a busted drumstick that he splintered up during the middle of a heavy hard-hitting 'Song For The Dead'. Gtng to see 'em play 'Ode to Clarissa' was also espcly a rare gem to experience...espcly thruout these days. All in all though, I feel that their best live sound came during the shows they played thruout the Castillo era. Idk, just seems that Jon Theodore doesn't hit 'em as hard as Joey did. (And no, I'm not 4gtng about Dave Grohl's time with 'em) Neither matches up with his style. Been nice though to have had Joey breakout into a drum solo as they've done recently with Jon during songs such as 'Burn The Witch' & 'Song For The Dead'. Interested to have seen/heard what he could've done with those opportunities. Seems there's times that Jon Theodore doesn't take advantage of those moments & puts lil forth & effort into these 'solos' he plays out. Any1 agree/disagree with that?
