Matsson is everything Logan wanted his kids to be.

Roman failed to see Mattson as anything other than a tech bro. He didn’t realize this guy is like Logan 2.0

Great scene. What gets me is Roman doesn’t quite grasp what is going on here. He doesn’t realize his fathers interested in Mattson taking over until it’s already in the works.

Sadly this cuts one of the best bits of this scene, when Logan says “it’s not happening”, but Mattson seems to understand he can’t discuss in front of Roman, so they do this little bullshit exchange about “side snacks” and then Mattson gives this tiny eye glance towards Roman which gets Logan to ask Roman to leave. Great acting and writing

Logan negotiating vs The kids in season 4 is ridiculous. The control of conversation from the jump, Logan was a monster

I think Logan finally realises that the best future for his empire is to sell it off. His kids are simply not up to the job. Kendall has his drug problem and insecurities (too unstable); Shiv is arrogant, and wants a seat at the table without putting up the work for it; And Roman - his last hope -- is well, too Roman with his sick picks and all sorts of other issues.

Matsson is such a great character. He comes off as this devil-may-care tech bro, but in reality, he knows EXACTLY what he's doing. Notice how in this scene, he's laying back relaxed while Roman and even Logan are leaning forward towards him as he slowly controls the conversation.

In a few minutes, Matsson got through and connected with Logan more than all the Roy kids. “But are you….really?” Matsson goes past Logan’s crude pecker joke and gets Logan to be honest for a few seconds. Sure they may still be bluffing/courting/kissing up/negotiation 101 bullshitting most of the time but Logan’s definitely being real when he talks about how he feels about America.

This is the moment when it becomes apparent that Roman really is clueless, and actually has just been lucky with his decisions so far.

I have to say, the writers did a killer job sneaking Matsson in as the person to take over. I was with Roman when I first watched this, completely blindsided this episode.

Logan's little soliloquy on the slow death of America's enterprising spirit was magnificently delivered by Brian Cox.

Around 2:28 is where Roman fucks up. Mattsen makes a very good point of Logan and his company being too old and rather than stepping up and making it known that once Logan goes, Roman will take his place and bring fresh/young ideas to the table. Instead he insists that Logan will be around forever which every party at the table knows isn't true.

Logan sees himself on Mattson more than on his kids: An ambitious young man who is bold, honest and also straightforward with no filter. Probably Logan sees a shadow of his younger self on Mattson. None of his kids have that attitude as Kendall is a drug addict and insecure and will talk his way out to get what he wants, Roman is a pervert, not too serious and likes to talk dirty, Shiv is arrogant but she mostly talk to talk not walk to walk, Connor never been involved in the company so he's fine. So, Logan made a decision: Selling his company to this young man he just met rather than keep it forever and let his kids ruin it to the ground. Mattson is Logan's true successor.

People say Logan doesn't want to leave his seat in the company. In reality, he doesn't want to give the seat to his children , cuz he sees them as weak. In their first interaction, he saw that Matsson was a killer just like him, so he had no problem in selling him the company. He was also willing to gove Rhea the CEO position in S2 when he saw how she backstabed the Pierce family.

Just the contrast between how Logan dealt with Mattson to his kids is night and day.
