When you get the flu, viruses turn your cells into tiny factories that help spread the disease. In this animation, NPR's Robert Krulwich and medical animator David Bolinsky explain how a flu virus can trick a single cell into making a million more viruses.

"How did that guy feel when you ripped off half his face?" "It was interesting because we did it while he was sleeping." Perfect quote.

This is so interesting to see, currently on my 5th day of having the flu and it's no joke. Coughing up mucus, had vertigo, fever for 3 days, nausea, vomiting, no appetite, fatigue (bed bound), ulcers in the throat and mouth. It just shows how amazing your body is at fighting infections, I hope I feel better in a couple days.

I really find it fascinating how a little tiny blob can do so much to make a person miserable for a few days.

The animation was amazing, and the simple explanation from the scientist was absolutely perfect. 10/10

I’m guessing a good amount of people that are currently viewing this at the moment are going through a bad virus. I know I am and I hope you all feel better soon. My stomach hurts so bad I threw up, I keep coughing, I switch from being too hot to too cold, I feel fatigued, have rashes that keep spreading throughout my body, and on top of all of that I’m unable to sleep at night.

wow this is incredible animation that really illustrates these concepts. excellent work!!! I wish there was one of these videos for everything in science. nothing is better at explaining science than this kind of video paired with explanation.

This video is amazing. I first watched it in sixth grade when we were learning about viruses. My classmates and I loved it, and we watched it more than once. I've never forgotten it. I'm now a sophomore in college 🙂 Just looked it up to review for my Biology test this week 🙂
