One of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen.

Cat Power, "The Greatest" LYRICS

Once I wanted to be the greatest
No wind or waterfall could stall me
And then came the rush of the flood
The stars at night turned deep to dust

Melt me down into big black armor
Leave no trace of grace just in your honor
Lower me down to culprit south
Make 'em wash a space in town

For the lead and the dregs of my bed
I've been sleeping
Lower me down, pin me in
Secure the grounds for the later parade

Once I wanted to be the greatest
Two fists of solid rock
With brains that could explain
Any feeling

Lower me down, pin me in
Secure the grounds
For the lead and the dregs of my bed
I've been sleeping for the later parade

Once I wanted to be the greatest
No wind or water fall could stall me
And then came the rush of the flood
The stars at night turned deep to dust

For anyone who's interested, this movie is currently featured on The Criterion Channel app for the month. HIGHLY recommend both this movie and the app. One of the saddest, most beautiful movies you'll ever see.

I found this movie at Blockbuster and took it home, the saddest movie I have ever seen! The story is so upsetting because you know it is based on truth. I have never seen a movie like it!

This is probably my favorite film ever... Joan Chen's quiet masterpiece will break your heart into a million pieces... and only love will heal you again... Thank you for posting this.

This movie stabbed me in the heart... With all due respect to director Joan Chen. This trailer doesn't truly represent this movie but tries to sentimentalize the subject matter. Make no mistake.. This movie will kick you in the nuts. Whether you have them or not.

I watched the movie and it brought me great sadness; it shows the evidence that money talks and the innocent are the victims of those with money... One day judgement will come to those who take advantage of the innocent.

Well, kind of. The story itself is utter fiction, but stuff _like this_ happened and was commonplace for youth sent to the countryside. Xiu Xiu is not a literal human being, but there were no shortage of girls in situations like hers.

ya, u should upload this movie. It is really a sad one. The main character portrayed in this movie is just one of the many poor victims under the Cultural Revolution.

this song is from the movie soundtrack "My Blueberry Nights" by Wong Kar Wai. the movie Xiu Xiu doesn't have this song as far as I can remember and I just watched this movie less than two weeks ago

It was a moment i was obsessed both by this song and movie. There is no connection between both. It was more about a feeling. It was kinda experimental, i wasn't expecting so many views !

I want this movie only because I admire Joan Chen's work. I saw this many moons ago, its a sad movie showing what took place in history. Remember this got banned in China as well. The movie itself is very expensive if you can find it.

but I agree with joe strummer, the connection between the soft song and this extremely brutal film is just sick

Your video is very well done! I only read a few reviews of this movie. They all agree with Top Jimmy; it's a sad movie that shows how nasty those communist leaders were. And continue to be for that matter. I just watched a 5 episode documentary made by the BBC in 2007. It's called Chiense School and it follows students at 3 schools in the town of Xiuning in Anhui Province. It's well done and defnitely worth watching.
