As an older man with children born in 1979 and 1982, I can tell you that my wife and I had 13 months of parental leave. I had 10 days off (with full pay) when the children were born. We shared every day about the same, my wife took the first half year for practical reasons. We could also add 5 weeks holiday each period. Our children then started in preschool / daycare. Just want to show that this is not something new in Sweden.

Another thing to take into calculations are the school lunches. They´re included in Sweden, which I don't believe they are everywhere in the U.S? Nowadays almost everyone go to school for 12 years (gymnasium is optional, but very few skip it), so that's over 2000 "free" lunches for every citizen who grew up here. I realise nothing is actually free, it's just a matter of paying out of pocket or paying with taxes. Personally I feel that higher taxes with much services included creates a more equal and stress free society to live in.

Children in Sweden also get free glasses or contact lenses up to 19 years of age 👌🏻

The day after we got home with my second child, my older child (3 at the time) started complaining about an aching tummy. We first thought he had stomach flue, but it turned into quit an ordeal. One minute he was screaming in agony at the top of his lungs, and the next he was completely lethargic and unresponsive. Scary AF. When we go to the hospital he had multiple examinations. X-ray, some kind of shine htrough, ultrasound x 4 (4 different doctors each more senior than the previous one) where they all said they could see something but could not say what it was. MRI etc. It ended with peek hole surgery and three days in a ward afterwards, with me sleeping on a couch with half my butt sticking out because my kid wanted me close so he was on the inside with tubes going everywhere and me laying very still not to disturb him. It was some kind of string between the naval and one of the intestines, something that can happen during pregnancy when the intestines move from the outside of the featus to the inside of the stomach. The motions of the intestines had placed them in such a way that they starved themseleve of blood, which is apparently excruiciatingly painful. It was easy for the surgeons to fix if you caught it in time, but if not you could end up with a colostomy bag for the rest of your life... or if not treated it would be lethal. I wouil not even venture a guess what that his treatment would have cost in the US, but I am sure that I have been ruined , or I would have had to watch my son die over a number of days in complete agony. To a big shout out and thank you to all the doctors and nurses that made my boy well again! So yea, I am biased for sure, but there is NO WAY I would ever want to have or rise a child in the US... never ever ever!

Dont forget to mention the 10 days after birth the father can stay home with the family. And also BVC (barnavårdcentral) were you go for free and have weekly/monthly checkups for your baby. And ALSO free prescriped medicine for children under 18 ❤️

The cost for daycare varies depending on income in the household, the cost you talk about is the average maximum i think. We pay 500 SEK per month for our daughter. Take care ❣️

One thing about giving birth in US compared to Sweden, is that in the US you aren´t allowed to eat anything during labor, only icechips. In Sweden we belive that you need your strenght and you are allowed to eat (they will give you hospital food for free)

It’s similar in all the Nordic countries. You should’ve mentioned the monthly payout from the government, the “barnbidrag”, that will pay out monthly up until the child turns 18.

After I gave birth to my first child I had to stay 2 nights at the hospital because she was born in week 36+6 so a bit premature. But she was not small at all she was like a full term baby, I payed 120 sek (12-13 dollars) per night so total of 240 sek (24-26 dollars). After I got home my insurance company called me and said that I could get compensation if I spent time at the hospital and had to stay the night there. They informed me that I could get the compensation even if it was because of childbirth. The insurance I had usually covers if you get into accidents or simular situations. So I did as they told me and I sent in my application to them for the two hospital nights. After two weeks they payed out 50 dollars to my account. I called them immediately and said that something must be wrong: You paid me 50 dollars but the hospital cost was only 26 dollars! Oh nothing is wrong, 50 dollars is the minimum payout for spending time at a hospital so everything seems to be in order... Okay but how much do I pay for this insurance every month? About 7 dollars so I didin't even remembered that I had it.. Same insurance company called my husband one year after he hurt his leg and asked him if he got a scar after the accident. My husband took a picture of the scar with his phone and sent it by e-mail to them. After 2-3 weeks he received 3000 sek (318 dollars)... Sweden is weird but so wonderful :)
