dissecting the relationships in 10 Things I Hate About You

10 Things I Hate About You (1999) is underrated and so much more than just a love story. Bianca is not just a boy-crazy princess. Kat is not just a hostile “untameable” woman. I’m sure Shakespeare wishes this was his original version. It is clearly superior.

I hope the blurring isn’t too distracting! What’s your favourite line from this movie? I’m a big fan of “she kissed me.” “Where?😏” “in the car 💕”

i really like this movie but it always annoys me that Bianca is superficial for liking the hot guy but Cameron's crush on bianca is "well intentioned" even though he admits he doesn't know anything about her either.

I always liked that Kat wasn't 'cold and uninterested' towards dating not because that trope of not wanting to be a popular girl or some school power struggle like in most other teen movies; its because something traumatic happened to her. So she put up walls and with those walls protected her sister from the same fate.

I cringe as well at those 'public displays of affection' in movies, and usually really hate it, especially between people who don't know each other well. However, this one never really did secondhand embarrass me, and I think it's because, similar to a comment I saw on a different video, he's not really declaring his love, he's making a public fool of himself. He's showing to her he doesn't mind being seen as silly to let her know he likes her, and is willing to put the work in for that. It shows in the scene, most of these scenes are very serious and 'romantic', and in this movie he's clearly aware it's kind of silly what he's doing. But that's just my take, I totally understand when something like that makes you cringe.

If I had a nickel for every time that Heath Ledger had to publicly embarrass himself for the love of a woman in a movie, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

I just find it mind-boggling and shocking that someone read The Taming of the Shrew and thought to themselves: "Yes, that would make the perfect romance movie. Let's turn the gaslighting, abusive, and misogynistic Petruchio into a romantic hero."

Thanks for the video, this is one of my favourite teen flicks of all time. The romantic in me likes to think that Kat and Patrick managed to make their relationship work, since they both saw each other as their real selves, and not the "scary" personas that others did.

Truly one of the best teen romantic comedies. RIP Heath Ledger. His acting was so natural, charming, and charismatic. The cast overall was really great!

I'm with you on the second hand embarrassment- I cannot watch people sing or do big public displays, it makes me want to peel my skin off.

Bianca truly deserved someone better than mr Nice Guy, hes as selfish and shallow as she used to be. He likes her because she's pretty and popular, he does a ton a thing to date her, and then threw them in her face when he realised she wasnt really interest, but dude, who forced you? He PAYS someone to date a girl??? How is he a good guy? hat was his character develepment, really?

I love this analysis! One thing I always thought is that Bianca is actually very smart. Both Stratford sisters are actually whip smart but I think Bianca chose to hide that part of her due to popularity (the trope that you're too cool for school/trying hard is for nerds etc.) It's the second library scene with Cameron when she gets mad he hasn't asked her out. Bianca knows more French (not hard to do compared to Cameron ha) but spits it out like it's nothing. Needing a tutor might not actually be necessary or maybe her father feels her grades aren't high enough because she's too focused on popularity and not school - we'll never know. But for as vapid as she comes off, I always assumed Bianca is just as smart as her sister.

Whhaaattt??? Heath singing in the bleachers is hilarious! I get the worst second hand embarrassment when she cries reading her poem at the end. I know that's the one of the most critical points but I just cannnooott. Have to mute skip or look away from the screen😭😂

This is a bit off-topic but I really like how Bianca still got to be just as feminine towards the end of the movie. No hate towards masculine women (all women are cool just the way they are) but I really appreciate how the movie doesn't demonize her hyper-fem style like a lot of other teen shows do. I think it'd be really cool if more teen movies embraced people being themselves- whether or not the character's style/outward expression matches gender stereotypes.

Thank you, I really enjoyed this video! I love Kat and Patrick.💖 One of my favourite lines is when Patrick, Cameron and the other dude are talking and Patrick says something like "you think I'm not a pretty guy?" kind of menacingly, I find it so funny 😭

Damn kat has a lot of interests and talents! Reading, soccer, drawing, writing, music, she can play guitar like what can’t this girl do?? Lol I also have always thought she is one of the most beautiful characters in teen rom coms ever. Like every time she’s on screen I am in awe😅

am i the only one who wasnt embarrassed about patrick singing in public? 😭 i think it was sweet, cute, and funny. it was already established that patrick as character is known as a "bad" boy and there have been different stories about his craziness around the school. so the scene with him singing in public and getting into trouble felt natural to me, esp with his character. like he doesnt mind doing something crazy from time to time

i feel like kat's predictable contradictions (doing the exact opposite, but in that way observing the rules) is a great way of showing her juvinality as well. I loved this little essay by the way <3

I have always absolutely loved this film. I think I was 14 or 15 when my friend and I rented it from Blockbuster (dating myself with that reference). We were so in love with it that we watched it 6 times in 3 days. Two 14 year old, heterosexual boys. Its so great to put this movie on every so often and instead of seeing it get dated with time and with newer perspectives, it just gets better or more beloved. However, I can't believe I never noticed Kat wore those pearls to prom, a symbol of her learning from Bianca like Bianca learned from her. Thanks for pointing that out.
