I restored one of these Omnibot 5402 2 years ago. A fun project.
There's a site with manuals and stuff for this "robot" online.
Powered from a large 6V battery, RC at 27MHz.
If you manage to control the arms and claws of it, that would impress me for sure, LOL.
And make it talk, and move around by itself, and..., and...

Back in the 60's I worked on a Collins Autopilot that had magnetic amplifiers. If you run across one I would love to see you explain it's operation.

There are so many new sensors now, so yes it might be cool to upgrade with new functionality.
Maybe it's too much work to add lidar etc, but some basic ultrasonic obstacle avoidance might be OK

Interesting project! I love those old Tomy robots. I was never lucky enough to own an Omnibot as a kid but i did get a Verbot, the voice controlled one that was, erm, a bit flaky to be polite. A couple of years back I mod'ed one to use a RPi Zero and the Google AIY kit to give it proper working voice control as well as voice assistant capability. I don't have a video of it on my YT channel but there is a 'reel' of it on my insta which you can view on the web without logging in if you're interested? I would post a link but experience shows comments with links disappear!

Cool. Looks like it might have 4 wheel drive. If you hack it then you can call it IMSAIbot. Otherwise it stays Omnibot. This should be a fun series in any case. π

You're lucky those batteries were from a different era when they were made very well and I used them exclusively. Duracell today I commonly refer to as "Dura-Leak"...will not use them anymore, Energizer is now my battery of choice.

Ok now you grab that robot and the tape and combine it with an alexa or google home motherboard, add some fancy vfd displays on his eyes, so it will talk and many stuff xD
