I'm trying to remember if it was 2012 or 2013 but I was driving a school bus just north of Memphis TN for the Tipton County schools and one of my students started singing this song ( he was in 3rd grade at the time ) and I was listening to the words, I asked him where he heard the song and he replied that it was the Thrift shop song😂 and that's how I found this song. The melody is incredible too...I can't dance but ya can't help to move when this song comes on. Plus , thrifting is a great way to reduce, reuse, recycle. Great song.

I think what made this song so iconic was they took such a mundane, lower class activity and hyped it up. Instead of "look at how much money I spent on this inane luxury brand" they went "look at how much money I DIDN'T spend."
They did it with full sincerity too. It never felt like they were being sarcastic or that they were mocking it. They genuinely made it seem cool and fun, which it was!
This song took the feeling of a thrift haul from "oh nice" to "this is a fuckin' SCORE!"
