Debut album out now: eon.lnk.to/envyofnone

Lyrics:
Deep in my veins I can still hear the echoes
Breaking the silence and locking the chain
Paint me with sadness fill me with shadows
Wash me away like the tears in the rain

Coming for love, coming for life
Open me up now, see where the darkness lies

When I look inside, know that I'll find you
Nowhere to run and there's nowhere to hide
When I look inside

Tracing you down to the heart of reflection
Ripples of rancor and phantoms of pain
Scars that are burning with aching obsession
Awaken the monster I've already slain

Coming for love, coming for life
Open me up now, see where the darkness lies

When I look inside, know that I'll find you
Nowhere to run and there's nowhere to hide
When I look inside

See where the darkness lies
See where the darkness lies

Envy Of None, the new band and debut self-titled album from Alex Lifeson (Rush), Andy Curran (Coney Hatch), Alfio Annibalini and singer Maiah Wynne due for release on Kscope on 8th April.

Video by Jaden D. www.jaden-d.com/

Alex Lifeson is no stranger to the concept of evolution. As a founding member of Rush, he’s been able to explore more musical ground than just about any other guitar player out there – taking rock to new progressive heights throughout the decades and always in the most wildly inventive of ways. His influence can be heard on countless bands around the world, from indie shoegaze and math rock to heavy metal and beyond. Over the last few years Lifeson has been focusing on a new project that, no matter how well-acquainted you are with his discography, will undoubtedly shatter all seeds of expectation and blow the mind. That project is Envy Of None.

The new band, also featuring Coney Hatch founder/bassist Andy Curran, accomplished producer and engineer Alfio Annibalini and singer-songwriter Maiah Wynne, will be releasing their self-titled debut album on April 8 via Kscope. Its 11 tracks – which ricochet between various shades of alternative, experimental and synth rock – throw surprises at every turn, twisting dark melodies against contemporary pop hooks. Lifeson himself is proudly aware of how little of it crosses over with the band that made him famous.

However, it was only when singer Maiah Wynne became involved that this truly started to feel like a band destined to go somewhere. Her haunting melodies and soul-baring intensity is – by the admission of her own bandmates – what truly brought this music to life. All things considered; she is a star in the making… “I sent over an early version of the song Shadow,” explains Andy Curran. “When I played what she’d done back to the others they were like, ‘Who is this crazy talented person?!’”

The album’s first singles, Liar and Look Inside, are out now. The industrial beats, driving fuzz bass and atmospheric guitars concoct a seductive swirl indeed – thrilling in ways closer to the darker art rock of Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and A Perfect Circle than anything these musicians have been known for prior.

“Maiah became my muse,” continues Alex Lifeson. “She was able to bring this whole new ethereal thing through her sense of melody on tracks like Liar and Look Inside. After hearing her vocals on Never Said I Love You, I felt so excited. I’ve never had that kind of inspiration working with another musician. When we say she’s special, it’s because she’s really fucking special!”

“One of my favourite things about these songs is the intimacy of them,” reveals Maiah Wynne. “It makes them feel different and more honest. There are some heavier songs too, like Enemy, and then tracks like Kabul Blues, that sound completely different to anything else.”

The album closer, Western Sunset, which was penned by Alex Lifeson in tribute to his dear friend Neil Peart. It’s a highly emotive piece of music to honour a man deeply missed by the rock community at large, and even more so by those who were lucky enough to know him. “I visited Neil when he was ill,” says Alex Lifeson. “I was on his balcony watching the sunset and found inspiration. There’s a finality about a sunset that kinda stayed with me throughout the whole process. It had meaning. It was the perfect mood to decompress after all these different textures… a nice way to close the book.”

It’s a book you’ll almost certainly want to be reading. Envy Of None’s self-titled album is due for release on April 8 via Kscope.

Alex Lifeson is an artist first. He is unlike any other big time musician out there. The difference is that he plays his guitar to fit the music, not his ego. He is a trailblazer and I’ve loved everything he’s done. I’ve followed Rush since I was 11 years old. I’m well into my 50’s. Maih lives here in the northwest and is a perfect fit for this project.

I’m a rush nut, and bought this album because of this, but this woman’s voice is amazing. Great record.

I'm on a rough patch right now, stuck inside a mental hospital. This soothes me and feels relaxing. Thank you. And to anyone else suffering right now - take care of yourself, spend time reflecting and dont beat yourself up too much. Life goes on, things will change for the better. Edit: thank you all for your support and kind words! I hope you're all doing good. ^^

This is really excellent. The arrangement is really cool and Maiah's singing is perfect. I can't wait to hear more. It doesn't "sound" like Alex Lifeson playing, which shows that he's willing to do new things, and that's great to see. This song has a lot of subtle stuff going on and doesn't hit you like a ton of bricks, but sneaks up on you before displaying its strength.

Lifelong diehard Rush fan here. This is a beautiful and compelling song. It draws the listener in. Lush, dense, trippy.. The sweet feminine vocal provides the perfect contrast, and is the icing on the cake. Is anyone else pondering a hidden significance to the blue pill, and not the red? We love you Lerxst. Thanks.

Thank you so much for sharing this! Despite being a Rush fan for 35 years now, I was ignorant of Alex and Envy of None until a few weeks ago when reading some magazine article. I have been playing this track often recently. As my 81 year old mother died yesterday, for me Western Sunset will always be connected with her. 💙

This brings to mind the indie, dream pop of the late 80's/ early 90's, notably The Cocteau Twins, and maybe Lush, Curve et al. Which is fine by me. I loved that music back in the day, and I'm a lifelong Rush fan too. Some Rush nuts may be disappointed that Lifeson didn't release a heavy rock or prog album, but I applaud him for doing something completely different. I'll be buying this album very soon.

Long time Rush fan here. And I completely dig this. This is absolutely nothing what I expected to hear from Alex Lifeson and at the same time I completely did not expect him to come out with anything that sounded like Rush. And that’s one of the many things I love about Alex Lifeson. I’m so happy that he’s a part of this.

Also a long-time Rush fan here, and proud of Alex. He's joined a great band here, and I love this song! Also, good of him to not be in the video. As a rock legend, there would be a temptation to roll him out into this video to "show him off" but they smartly resisted this. Neither the video nor the music displays overtly the Rush legend, and that's great. This is a new band, and they deserve their own identity.

Alex Lifeson. I don't know that there's more to say. I don't want to take anything away from the other artists in this band. This is awesome music. So thankful to have stumbled upon it just now from looking at Alex's wiki page. I will say I've been a monster Rush fan for over 41 years, and saw my first Rush concert, Moving Pictures, nearly 43 years ago. My brain had to percolate (read: mature) for about a year to understand what those three would come to mean to me for the rest of my life.

Since I was 11 years old, I was amazed at the monster musicians Alex played with. Alex has yet again surrounded himself with monster musicians. I got my CD today...

I met Alex back in the late 80’s, and yes he’s every bit the class act you’d think he is, such a gentleman and what a talent. This new direction shows his versatility as a musician. Love it 🎸
