There's plenty of intrigue surrounding the 2024 World Rally Championship season, which begins this week with its annual visit to Monte Carlo.

The championship has been blown wide open following the news that reigning world champion Kalle Rovanpera has opted to run part-time to recharge his batteries for a full-time return in 2025.

Rovanpera’s absence means the title battle will likely be fought between Toyota’s Elfyn Evans, a three-time championship runner-up, and the Hyundai duo of 2019 world champion Ott Tanak and five-time runner-up Thierry Neuville.

Bryn Lucas is joined by Tom Howard to take a peek at what 2024 can offer.

WRC needs more than 8 main cars in Rally 1 to be fair too 🎉

New points system is interesting, kind of reminds me of what they do at the Spa 24 hours where points are dished out at certain points during the race.

Still struggling with the point system. So if im in a 7th up until Saturday and im chilling saving my tyres, saving my car, and i have the best starting position for Sunday i can go and grab 12 points. Even if i was nowhere the previous 3 days. Also whats going on with super rally? Are they eligible for points on Sunday?

I miss gravel notes. It was my favorite rally podcast.

I actually really like the idea of giving some focus to Sunday but I just feel its a little weird to get nothing for being the overall winner. If they upped the total points available to 33 instead of 30 and just gave like a podium bonus of 3, 2, 1 points for 1st-3rd (or some other combo of points to make it more meaningful), that would be enough I think to keep the stated goals of the new points system but take away the main issue most people have with it. Even if it doesn't change a lot mathematically in the end, it makes it feel like you are being rewarded for actually winning the event.

I'm still waiting for Citroen's comeback to the sport, they were the greatest at making rally monsters and even then on Rally 2 their car is really good. I only wish new fans would enjoy this little French car manufacturer make a car that tears apart rally stages without breaking a sweat.

After all the measures they took to reduce the cost of entry in Rally1 they still only sport 8 cars on the roster. Something's amiss here.

Yeah, Sundays could be pretty boring. How to fix it? Give the teams a fresh set of tyres, for the power stage. Simple & easy.

Had no clue Drivers would have the option to run Rally1 cars without hybrid that’s cool. I mean as long as the specs are still similar enough to each other like how weight was mentioned I see nothing wrong with this, especially since they already use biofuel

If they did the points the other way round I might like it

The sad thing is, no matter who wins the championship this season, a lot of people will say they are undeserved to be the champions due to the lack of Kalle and Seb, unless that champion managed to successfully defend that title next year.

I’m praying for snow and ice this monte, feel like global warming has turned the last couple of years into normal tarmac rounds

Would love Ott to win his second, but my brain says Evans will win the championship in 2024. He must do, as he's the most steady and consistent driver while Ott and Thierry fight for rally wins and invariably make costly mistakes. Sadly, consistency pays even more so this year, not rally wins. So if Evans doesn't get the title this year, he never will. The points system is completely idiotic imo. All they needed to do was to add 2-3 bonus points for each of the Sunday's stages, keeping the rest the same. And of course there are other solutions. But the one they came up with is diabolical. It's way too complicated for half the fans, let alone anyone new to the sport, it will discourage people from engaging. And most of all, it completely devalues the rally win, which goes massively against the DNA of the sport. Let's hope they change it asap!
