The crowd is quiet because when they record live they usually directly record the instruments/vocals. Thats why the crowd sounds distant because whats being picked up is through Nas' mic. They were going nuts just the noise cancellation on them mic makes it so that the song isn't drowned out by cheering.

For those who are hatin on Primo keep in mind tha man has contributed to the best acts in hip hop in probably the biggest quantity. One of the roles of a dj is to obviously help the emcee with crowd and breath control. You can see Nas catch his breathe several times while Premier ends the line. Also, Premier is trying to hint to the crowd to follow suit because they obviously need to tune in more. In addition, collaboration and feeding off the energy of others is a staple of hip. This performance is what hip hop is supposed to sound like: the emcee and dj performing in sync and in collaboration with each other.

people complaining about the DJ clearly haven't ever watched a hip-hop show before...he ends most of Nas' lines so he can take a breath if he wants to. It's pretty typical in a rap show. Maybe he overdoes in the hook, but that happens once the entire song.
look up pretty any hip-hop show and i bet they are the same

Metal head here. My exposure to rap has been limited. Few weeks I put on illmatic in background at work and by the end of it, was absolutely blown. Easily one of the best albums I ever heard. Was so unexpected. Slowly and surely getting into hip hop because of him. Really seeing what makes the genre so unique.
