I think him using dopplegangers on stage is also a direct reference to Doctor Doom, who frequently used "Doombots" (extremely convincing robot replicas of himself) to make appearances in places too risky for he himself to go. These bots would often get revealed or defeated to not actually be doom himself, but revealing this meant nothing because Doom was still at large. It only made him more of a villain and more intangible.

First of all RIP to Daniel Dumile Youll forever be an inspiration to me and many others. Another reason why DOOM sends another person to perform for him its because Dr DOOM in the comics used to send DOOMbots to act like him so he never let his guard down and study his next enemy or in this case his audience.
