Minstrel In The Gallery Lyrics

The minstrel in the gallery looked down upon the
smiling faces.
He met the gazes --- observed the spaces between the
old men's cackle.
He brewed a song of love and hatred --- oblique
suggestions --- and he waited.
He polarized the pumpkin-eaters --- static-humming
panel-beaters --- freshly day-glow'd factory cheaters
(salaried and collar-scrubbing).
He titillated men-of-action --- belly warming, hands
still rubbing on the parts they never mention.
He pacified the nappy-suffering, infant-bleating
one-line jokers --- T.V. documentary makers
(overfed and undertakers).
Sunday paper backgammon players --- family-scarred
and women-haters.
Then he called the band down to the stage and he
looked at all the friends he'd made.
The minstrel in the gallery looked down on the
rabbit-run.
And threw away his looking-glass - saw his face in
everyone.

That this band is not in the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" is proof to me that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is not entirely legit. Ian Anderson is beyond words brilliant! Period. Genius. Absolutely fantastic Musician, artist, lyricist. Wow... Just Wow.

I'm 59 and this song still blows my mind. Brings me right back to my cousins bedroom after sneaking into the attic for a few hits. I still remember each and every word. Damn,,,I'm so happy to have grown up in the 70's. BAM!!

I don’t always listen to Jethro Tull, but when I do so do the neighbors.

I am amazed now as an adult listening to this music almost 45 years after it was created and I am still just blown away!! Prog rock of the 70s was just so far ahead of anything these days!!

Back in the 70s I don't remember running into a single Tull fan. Have recently been revisiting some of my old Tull lps and they still stand up--whoops!!!---quite well.

Barre lays down some of the most powerful chords in rock and roll.

So lovely to hear this version, the album version, with the fantastic guitar work of Martin Barre in the middle section. He produces the most beautiful and musical guitar sound. He always has, right from "Stand Up" onwards.

No better showman in the 70s,, saw the boys in '73 in Iowa City and later in '17 Chicago. The years have treated him very well. I know of no better winter music than Tull (and Led Zep) from the 70s. I grew up with them and grew old with them. THIS is one of the best recroded.

Nobody serves up rock and roll like Jethro Tull and Ian Anderson! And we all consume it to our delight!

I saw Jethro Tull in 1977 and it was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. What a show!!!

A Jethro Tull song is more than a song, its an experience, like this song so amazingly proves.

It is just a fantastic song and it is still as incredible in 2019, as it was when it first came out in the 1970's!!! This is timeless music!!!
